Euro area factories grow as France and Italy slip back
The S&P Global and HCOB euro area manufacturing PMI, or purchasing managers' index, came in at a final 52.7 in October. The flash estimate was 52.4 and the September reading 52.9; the index stayed in expansion territory for a ninth month.
The output index fell from 53.6 to 52.8, a four-month low. Six of the 8 countries surveyed expanded, while France and Italy contracted; investingLive attributes French weakness to domestic political uncertainty. Export growth was the fastest in more than four and a half years, and backlogs rose at the fastest common pace since May 2022.
Input price inflation reached a five-month high and has been accelerating for 2 months; the survey links this to energy prices and raw material shortages. Supplier delivery times lengthened the most since June, and firms built input stocks for the first time since December 2022. The level of the input prices component does not appear in the 3 sources reviewed and could not be verified.
The data came 2 days before the euro area flash inflation estimate for October, due on 4 November. Our earlier entry put national HICP rates at 2.8% in Germany and 5.6% in Italy. Factory price pressure does nothing to close that gap ahead of the ECB's 16–17 December meeting; Anadolu Agency (state media) also confirms that 6 countries expanded.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
Euro area manufacturing is growing, but the growth comes with rising prices and stockbuilding: input costs are at a five-month high and firms are building inventory for the first time since December 2022. Contraction in France and Italy carries into industry the ECB's problem of managing two different shocks with a single rate. The most likely path is price pressure keeping the December hike debate alive.
Likely effects
- ECB decisionNegativeWeeks
Input prices accelerating for 2 months strengthen the case for a hike before 16–17 December; the 4 November flash HICP will test that reading.
- France and ItalyNegative1–6 months
Two large economies contracting while the region grows shows the single rate working differently in the south and in France; a December hike would bite harder there.
- Turkish exportsUncertain1–6 months
Euro area exports growing at their fastest in 4.5 years support demand for intermediate goods, but contraction in France and Italy could weaken orders from those markets.
Possibilities, ranked
- 1Price pressure persists55%
Growth holds in the 52 band, input prices stay high and the ECB keeps the December hike debate open.
Watch: Euro area flash HICP on 4 November
- 2Inventory cycle slows30%
Stockbuilding ends, the output index keeps falling and weakness in France and Italy spreads.
Watch: The output index falling below 52.8 in the November flash PMI
- 3Energy eases15%
Energy prices fall, input price inflation slows quickly and December pressure fades.
Watch: Slower input price inflation in the November PMI
