Hiscox Re cuts net catastrophe risk as rates fall 14%

Hiscox said on 3 November that rates in its reinsurance arm fell 14% over nine months. Gross written premiums rose 4.5% to 1.13 billion dollars, while net premiums fell 7.5% to 486.1 million dollars. Net catastrophe exposure is 36% below its hard-market peak.

Location: LONDON

Hiscox Re is not walking away from risk; it is ceding it. Gross premiums growing while net premiums shrink shows the company passing additional risk to third-party capital. Its insurance-linked securities assets hit a record 3.1 billion dollars on 1 October, up 200 million dollars in the third quarter and 139% on the year. Artemis puts the figure at about 1.5 billion dollars at the start of the year. Even after the 14% fall, rates remain 55% above 2018 levels, and 83% of the portfolio was deemed adequately priced or better at the half-year. The company expects further reductions on 1 January.

The third-quarter loss picture cuts both ways. In big-ticket lines, the benefit of a quiet catastrophe year was more than offset by losses from the Middle East conflict; Hiscox gave no figure. At Hiscox London Market, its Lloyd's arm, premiums rose 9.9% to 1.05 billion dollars while rates fell 5% overall. Cycle management in large property, upstream energy and renewables trimmed growth by about 9 points. An Argenta assessment reported by Artemis the same day found that combined ratios planned at Lloyd's for 2027 are the weakest since 2019.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Hiscox's nine-month numbers are a template for a softening market: the traditional balance sheet trims net risk and third-party capital fills the gap. The 14% rate decline sits on the catastrophe side, while war losses are what erode profit. The most likely path is a further property catastrophe reduction in January and a marked deterioration in Lloyd's profitability for 2027.

Likely effects

  • Property catastrophe reinsuranceUncertainWeeks

Net risk 36% below peak shows traditional capacity pulling back as prices fall, with insurance-linked capital filling the gap.

  • Lloyd's profitabilityNegative1–6 months

Planned 2027 combined ratios at their weakest since 2019 show syndicates have less room to concede on price in January.

  • War and specialty risksNegative1–6 months

Middle East losses offsetting a quiet catastrophe year support the view that war-line pricing will decouple from the broader decline.
