Rising US yields push Argentina's country risk back towards 600
JP Morgan's Argentina country-risk index touched 600 basis points intraday on 7 October before closing at 586. A two-day relief rally sparked by Brazil's election reversed once the US ten-year yield hit 5.34%.
Infobae reported on 7 October that JP Morgan's country-risk measure, the extra yield Argentina's dollar bonds pay over US Treasuries, rose 9 points to close at 586 basis points after an intraday high of 600. Río Negro reported the same close as a 2.30% rise, equivalent to about 13 points, so the two sources disagree on the size of the move. The S&P Merval index fell 2.5% to 2,824,123. Bank shares lost between 3.1% and 4.6%.
The trigger came from abroad. According to Infobae, the US ten-year yield touched 5.34% during the session before easing to around 5.28%, with December Brent at $101. Perfil reported that country risk had hit a year high of 650 basis points on 2 October, then fell 82 points in the two days after Brazil's first round. The 9-point rise on 7 October gave back only a small part of that gain. As long as US yields stay above 5%, the floor under Argentina's borrowing costs stays high.
The currency front was calm. Infobae said the official wholesale dollar fell 0.2% to 1,517 pesos and the parallel-market dollar closed at 1,555 pesos. The central bank, BCRA, bought $45m and gross reserves rose to $49,134m. According to Río Negro, the Global 2035 bond fell 1.1% to $75.39 and the Bonar 2029 dropped 1.2% to $53.90; the gap between the official and parallel rates stood at 4.50%.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
Argentina's risk premium now tracks US Treasury yields more closely than domestic news. With the US ten-year near 5.3%, a 586 basis-point premium keeps the all-in cost of dollar borrowing high. The most likely path is that country risk oscillates in a 550–650 range in step with the US bond market.
Likely effects
- Argentine external borrowingNegative1–6 months
US yields plus a 586-point premium keep new market borrowing in dollars expensive, so debt service leans on reserves and BCRA purchases.
- Argentine banksNegativeWeeks
Bank-share losses of up to 4.6% reflect fears that falling bond values will hit balance sheets.
- Regional assetsUncertainWeeks
Optimism over Brazil's election is not enough to offset the US rate shock; regional risk appetite remains tied to Washington.
