Argentina's country risk breaks above 700 points intraday

Argentina's country risk spread climbed to 710 basis points intraday on 20 October, from 589 on 12 October. The official dollar rose to 1,545 pesos and the stock-market dollar above 1,627 pesos.

Location: BUENOS AIRES

Rava Bursátil data show the country risk gauge at 589 basis points on 12 October, after which it rose for five straight sessions. It closed at 648 on 16 October and at 675 on 19 October, up 27 points on the day. La Nación reported 710 points at 14:13 local time on 20 October, and El Litoral also gave 710. The spread has thus widened by 121 basis points in roughly two weeks; the final close for the day could not be verified.

On the currency side, La Nación said the dollar at Banco Nación ended 20 October at 1,495 pesos bid and 1,545 offered. The wholesale rate rose to 1,525 pesos, while the CCL, regarded as the legal parallel rate, reached 1,627.72 pesos at 15:34. That puts the gap between the CCL and the wholesale rate at about 6.7%. The informal dollar was quoted at 1,565 pesos by La Nación and 1,560 by El Litoral.

The sources point to no single cause for the 121-point widening, but external conditions tightened in the same week. The US 2-year yield rose 3 basis points to 4.79% on 20 October. In neighbouring Brazil, ahead of the 25 October run-off, a Real Time Big Data poll put Flávio Bolsonaro on 48% against Lula's 45%. An AtlasIntel–Bloomberg poll had the race at 49.8% to 47.6%, within the margin of error.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

A 121 basis-point widening in two weeks shows Argentina's window for returning to international markets is narrowing. The sources identify no single trigger; a US front end at 4.79% and a neck-and-neck Brazilian election are weighing on high-yield Latin American debt at the same time. If the spread does not fall back below 650 after 25 October, the refinancing calendar slips.

Likely effects

  • External borrowingNegative1–6 months

A spread above 700 points raises the cost of any new international issue and increases the need to roll maturing debt from domestic sources.

  • Currency and inflationNegativeWeeks

The 6.7% gap between the CCL and the wholesale rate keeps demand for dollars alive; peso weakness can pass through to inflation via import prices.

  • Emerging market debtNegativeWeeks

Simultaneous pressure on Argentina and Brazil suggests risk appetite for high-yield sovereign debt, Türkiye's included, has turned selective.
