China's factory index misses forecasts and slips back into contraction

The National Bureau of Statistics manufacturing PMI (purchasing managers' index) fell from 50.1 to 49.3 in October. Bloomberg's consensus was 49.9 and the forecast cited by Newsquawk 50; the composite index also fell from 50.7 to 49.7.

Location: BEIJING

Demand and output drove the contraction together: new orders fell from 50.5 to 49.4 and production from 51.7 to 49.8. By firm size, only large companies stayed above the threshold at 50.2; medium-sized firms read 48.4 and small firms 47.5. High-tech manufacturing grew at 51.3 and equipment manufacturing at 50.6, while consumer goods fell to 48.8 and energy-intensive industry to 47.3. Production and new orders in rail, shipbuilding and aerospace, and in computers and electronics, stayed at 53 or above.

The official statement, carried by state media Xinhua and China Daily, blames demand pulled forward ahead of National Day and an uncertain international environment. The weakness does not look confined to the holiday effect: construction activity fell 2.3 points to 48.0 and construction new orders 5.7 points to 40.0. The headline non-manufacturing index fell from 50.2 to 49.7, while services held at 50.0.

Cost pressure also persists. The input price index fell 4 points to 56.8 but stayed 5.1 points above the output price index at 51.7. According to the official assessment cited by SMM, price indices for fuel processing and for chemical fibres and plastics are above 60 because of crude oil. Minsheng Bank chief economist Wen Bin expects fourth-quarter growth of 4.6–4.7%. The new export orders index does not appear in the sources reviewed, so the contribution of external demand could not be verified.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The October data are too broad to be explained by a single month's holiday effect: demand, construction and small firms all fell below 50 in the same month. Growth rests on AI and equipment sectors while the broad, labour-intensive base weakens. The most likely path is a partial recovery in November, with Beijing opting for incremental support rather than a large package.

Likely effects

  • Commodity demandNegative1–6 months

Construction new orders down at 40.0 weaken demand for building inputs such as steel and cement; the 4-point fall in the input price index points the same way.

  • Factory profitabilityNegativeWeeks

A 5.1-point gap between input and output prices leaves oil-linked costs with producers; small firms at 47.5 have the thinnest buffer.

  • Turkish manufacturersNegative1–6 months

If idle Chinese capacity feeds into export prices, Turkish producers could face fiercer price competition in third markets.

Possibilities, ranked

  1. 1
    Partial recovery55%

The holiday effect unwinds and the November index nears 50, but construction and small firms stay weak.

  2. 2
    Structural slowdown30%

New orders stay below 50 for a second month and weakness becomes entrenched outside technology.

Watch: Medium and small firm indices falling below 48.4 and 47.5

  3. 3
    Early support15%

Beijing responds to the weak data with targeted construction and consumption measures before year-end.
