Intruder granted itself global admin rights in the ConnectWise breach

Huntress said on 19 October that the intruder had granted itself Entra ID global administrator rights in a customer tenant and added credentials valid until 2028. ConnectWise's Cloud Backup service and six linked applications have been down since 17 October, with no restoration date.

Location: TAMPA

ConnectWise detected the attack on 15 October and on 17 October disabled seven application identities and revoked their certificates. Help Net Security reports that Cloud Backup, SaaS Security and Cloud Management were suspended as of 19 October: no scheduled backups are running, and customers cannot restore data either. The product, formerly SkyKick, was bought in 2024 and forms part of a platform reaching more than 100,000 managed service providers. A managed service provider, or MSP, is a firm that runs its clients' information systems remotely.

The figures on scale diverge. Huntress has confirmed unauthorised access in at least 162 Microsoft 365 tenants; sign-in attempts were made against roughly 1,000 accounts from the attacking address and more than 300 succeeded. Bank Info Security reports that in most cases the intruder established persistence within five minutes of the first sign and worked through targets in alphabetical order. In one case the Cloud Management Teams application made itself global administrator, then added credentials valid until 2028 to two trusted applications, including Huntress's own.

The target set stands out. The same address also went after 16 institutions working on policy, national security, trade and critical minerals on 15 October, and those attempts failed because no ConnectWise application was present. Microsoft described the incident as a supply chain attack. How the credentials leaked and who the attacker is had not been disclosed as of 19 October, and ConnectWise said it was not yet determined whether a product flaw played a part.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The incident has moved from the breach of a backup product into the administrative layer of the MSP chain. Persistence built in five minutes and credentials left valid until 2028 show that disabling applications is not enough to clean up. The second wave aimed at critical minerals and trade policy bodies suggests the purpose may be collection rather than ransom; with no attribution yet, that is a reading and not a certainty.

Likely effects

  • Managed service providersNegativeWeeks

Every day without backups or restores leaves the last line of defence against ransomware empty across the customers of more than 100,000 MSPs.

  • Trust in cloud applicationsNegative1–6 months

Trusted applications being able to grant themselves administrator rights puts a wholesale audit of third-party app permissions in Microsoft 365 tenants on the agenda.

  • Policy institutionsNegative1–6 months

The wave aimed at 16 bodies working on critical minerals and trade shows that the institutions running supply chain talks are direct targets.

Possibilities, ranked

  1. 1
    Staged restoration, more victim reports55%

ConnectWise brings services back step by step with new credentials, but the tenant count climbs as MSPs uncover hidden persistence.

Watch: ConnectWise's service restoration notice and Huntress's updated tenant count

  2. 2
    Attribution to a state-linked group30%

The critical minerals targets and the quiet persistence lead the incident to be tied to an espionage operation, and CISA and its partners issue an advisory.

Watch: A technical statement on the actor from CISA or Microsoft

  3. 3
    Ransom or data leak15%

The intruder monetises the access obtained, and a ransom note at MSP clients or a listing on a leak site appears.
