CoreWeave default protection tops 1,000bp as AI debt tightens

Five-year credit default swaps on AI cloud company CoreWeave, the insurance investors buy against a borrower going under, hit a record on 15 October and stood at 1,038 basis points around midday.

Location: NEW YORK

According to The Motley Fool, 1,000 basis points is generally treated by the market as the threshold for distressed debt, and CoreWeave's CDS has risen 164% in a year. The company carries roughly $51bn in debt and lease obligations. Last quarter it spent $6.4bn on capital expenditure, and free cash flow was minus $5.7bn. Revenue more than doubled to $2.58bn, yet the net loss widened to $626mn.

Data compiled by Naked Capitalism show the 2032 bonds the company sold in June with a 9.625% coupon trading at a 14.5% yield on 14 October; its borrowing cost has risen by about 5 points in four months. ZeroHedge reports that on 15 October the CDS widened 136 basis points to 1,118, while the 2032 bonds fell below 78 cents. The US high-yield spread widened 11 basis points to 324, its widest since March.

The trigger was a Gartner report on 14 October. It forecast that 80% of so-called neoclouds, independent GPU cloud providers, will lose their independence by 2030. According to Investing.com, CoreWeave shares fell 15.5% that day, then recovered about 6% on 15 October after Nvidia's chief executive said the company did not need a rescue.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

CoreWeave's CDS breaking through 1,000 basis points shows the market pricing the weakest link in the credit chain that funds AI investment. The widening of the high-yield spread to 324 basis points suggests the stress is not confined to one company. What matters now is how much more expensive refinancing the debt becomes.

Likely effects

  • Credit marketNegative1–6 months

With the 2032 bonds trading at a 14.5% yield, the company's next borrowing will cost more or require more collateral.

  • US TreasuriesUncertainWeeks

Money fleeing credit risk moved into government bonds on 15 October, pulling down yields at the far end of the curve despite inflation.

  • FedUncertainWeeks

A rate hike while credit spreads widen risks amplifying financial stress; this helped push an October hike out of pricing.
