Mexican core inflation beats forecasts as services reach 4.26%
INEGI data show consumer prices rose 0.41% in the first half of October, taking annual inflation to 3.62%. The core index rose 0.25% against an expected 0.17%; electricity jumped 18.51% as the summer subsidy ended.
Mexico's statistics institute INEGI published inflation data for the first half of October on 22 October. According to Expansión, consumer prices rose 0.41% over the fortnight, against 0.38% expected in the Citi survey. Annual inflation stood at 3.62%. Infobae notes that this is slightly below the 3.63% recorded a year earlier, but the fortnightly rise was well above last year's 0.28%.
The upside surprise came from core inflation, which strips out volatile items such as energy and food. The core index rose 0.25% over the fortnight, against 0.17% expected in the Citi survey, taking annual core inflation to 3.78%. Services prices were up 4.26% on the year and goods 3.28%. According to Infobae, insurance and financial services rose 7.06% year on year, and restaurants and hotels 6.16%.
The non-core index rose 0.98% over the fortnight. Electricity became 18.51% more expensive as the summer tariff subsidy ended in 18 cities, including Monterrey and Cancún, and air fares rose 14.77%. Energy and government-set tariffs climbed 1.85% over the fortnight, while agricultural prices fell 0.11%. In the Citi survey, the expectation for core inflation at end-2026 eased from 3.88% to 3.80%, while the headline forecast stayed at 3.90%.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
Headline inflation in Mexico looks calm, but pressure is building in services: core beat expectations by 8 basis points and services are at 4.26%. The 18.51% jump in electricity is seasonal and will not recur; the stickiness in services is persistent. With core at 3.78%, Banxico's room to cut rates is limited.
Likely effects
- Monetary policyNegativeWeeks
Core inflation holding at 3.78% and services rising to 4.26% weaken Banxico's case for rate cuts.
- PesoUncertainWeeks
With the Fed having raised rates to 3.75–4.00% in September, Banxico's caution preserves the rate differential: supportive for the peso, a drag on growth.
- HouseholdsNegative1–6 months
Annual rises of 7.06% in insurance and financial services and 6.16% in restaurants mean lower-income households face services inflation well above the headline rate.
Possibilities, ranked
- 1Headline stays in a 3.6–3.9% band60%
The electricity effect fades, but sticky services keep core above 3.7%.
Watch: The annual core rate in October CPI data due in early November
- 2Core accelerates25%
Services prices gain momentum and year-end expectations rise to 4%.
Watch: The end-2026 core expectation in the Citi survey rising above 3.80%
- 3Rapid slowdown15%
Falling agricultural prices and weak demand pull core below 3.6%.
Watch: The fortnightly core rise staying below 0.15% in the first half of November
