Myanmar military bombs crowded market in Rakhine, killing at least 50
An air strike by Myanmar's military on a wholesale market in Kyauktaw at midday on 28 September killed at least 50 people and wounded 58, according to the UN. The Arakan Army had reported 33 dead on the first day.
Anadolu Agency reported on 29 September that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said at least 50 people were killed and 58 wounded. The strike hit a market of more than 200 shops in Kyauktaw township in Rakhine state. Türk said the attack raised serious concern about respect for international humanitarian law. It came hours before Malaysia began deporting about 5,000 Myanmar nationals.
Al Jazeera reported on 28 September that the Arakan Army, which controls the area, said a fighter jet dropped 2 bombs near the market at midday. The group put the toll at no fewer than 33 dead and 36 wounded. It has captured 14 of the state's 17 townships since November 2023. The military made no statement on the strike; it has previously maintained that it hits only legitimate military targets. About 500,000 people are displaced in Rakhine.
