ASELSAN wins a 1 billion euro order for long-range air defence

ASELSAN told the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) on 1 October that it had signed a 1,008,500,000-euro long-range air defence contract with the Presidency of Defence Industries. On the same day Otokar announced an armoured vehicle export contract worth $1,472,080,360.

Location: ANKARA

According to an Anadolu Agency (AA) report on 1 October, ASELSAN's contracts cover ongoing serial production projects for long-range air defence systems. SavunmaSanayiST reported that the company had already signed contracts worth 1,470,500,012.38 euros for similar projects in July. The same report said President Erdoğan announced at the NATO summit in Ankara in July that an additional $24 billion had been allocated to the Steel Dome project. Steel Dome is Türkiye's project for a layered air and missile defence umbrella.

According to AA, Otokar's contract covers the supply of several types of wheeled armoured vehicles along with integrated logistics support. Deliveries will begin in 2027 and be completed over three years. The contract runs for seven years, and a performance guarantee of $441,624,108 will be provided to the customer. The buyer country was not disclosed, and the contract's entry into force depends on official approvals. According to Ekonomim, ASELSAN shares accounted for about 10% of the BIST 100's gain on 1 October.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

ASELSAN's new 1 billion euro order on 1 October, following 1.47 billion euros in July, shows the $24 billion earmarked for Steel Dome turning into contracts. Otokar's $1.47 billion deal points to defence exports growing in land vehicles as well. Despite the fund crisis, defence spending remains a budget priority.

Likely effects

  • Air defence capacityPositive6 months+

Serial production contracts speed up the entry of extended-range systems into the inventory, giving the Steel Dome timetable concrete shape.

  • Defence exportsPositive6 months+

Otokar's deliveries, starting in 2027, could add about $1.47 billion to defence export revenue over three years.

  • Public financesNegative1–6 months

The additional $24 billion for Steel Dome narrows room for flexibility in public spending at a time when reserves are shrinking and the fund crisis continues.
