Disabled tanker drifts towards Kanlıca shore, halting Bosphorus traffic

The Malta-flagged 110-metre tanker IVYAN suffered engine failure off Kanlıca on the evening of 11 October and drifted towards the shore before its crew dropped anchor. Bosphorus traffic was suspended and reopened after two tugs towed the vessel to the Küçükçekmece anchorage.

Location: BOSPHORUS

According to a Hürriyet report published at 20:45 on 11 October, IVYAN was sailing from the Bulgarian port of Varna to Monopoli in Italy when it closed in on the shore by the Kanlıca ferry pier and its waterfront mansions. The crew dropped anchor, preventing a grounding or collision with the shore. The Directorate General of Coastal Safety attributed the incident to engine failure. Coordinated by Istanbul Vessel Traffic Services, the ship was taken to the Küçükçekmece anchorage with a pilot on board and the tug KURTARMA-7 in escort.

Sources differ on the cargo. Reports from Hürriyet and the İHA news agency say the tanker was carrying chemicals, while Türkiye Today reported on 12 October that it was carrying about 6,000 tonnes of vegetable oil. No source said how many hours traffic was halted, and no injuries, damage or spill were reported. The time of the incident could not be verified either.

It was the second accident in the strait in a week. On 7 October the excursion boat Bosfor struck a moored yacht at Vaniköy and then the pier of the historic Kazasker Necmettin Efendi mansion. Every ship leaving Black Sea ports for the Mediterranean must use this waterway, and on 10 October Russia approved its first 500,000-tonne diesel export tranche.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The incident ended cheaply, but it was a reminder of the constraint: one ship's engine failure can close the Black Sea's only sea outlet for hours. In a week when Russian diesel is starting to return to the market with a 500,000-tonne tranche, every stoppage in the Bosphorus feeds directly into waiting times and freight. The likeliest path is that the incident stays a local safety debate, with no lasting change to traffic rules.

Likely effects

  • Black Sea shippingNegativeWeeks

A two-way closure of the strait lengthens waiting times for tankers and bulk carriers, pushing back delivery schedules for diesel and grain.

  • Istanbul coastal safetyUncertain1–6 months

A second accident in a week reopens the debate over the scope of pilot and tug escorts and the risk along the mansion-lined shore.

  • TürkiyeUncertainWeeks

Coastal Safety's swift response contained the risk, but a spill would have imposed costs on Istanbul's waterway and shoreline economy.

Possibilities, ranked

The Coastal Safety review stays confined to a technical fault, and traffic and rules are unchanged.

Additional measures, such as tug escorts or speed limits for ships carrying hazardous cargo, come up for discussion.

The cargo is confirmed as chemical, a spill or damage report emerges, and the incident becomes an environmental case.
