China's rare-earth export value grows twice as fast as volume
Chinese customs data show rare-earth exports rose 6.7% year on year in September to 4,269.8 tonnes, while export value climbed 14.3% to $68.09 million. Volume for January–September fell 9.6% to 43,711 tonnes.
According to a Reuters report published on Investing.com, September shipments fell 9.8% from 4,735 tonnes in August but stayed above the roughly 4,000 tonnes of the same month last year. Reuters attributed the rise to a recovery in overseas buying after the summer lull. Customs lines carried by FX168 and FX678 at 10:40 on 14 October confirm the same tonnage and the January–September total. Value data cited by IT Home show September exports of $68.094 million, up 14.3% year on year.
Read together, the two series imply export value per tonne rose about 7% year on year, pointing to Beijing capping volume while holding unit prices high. Customs' country and product breakdown will come later in the month, so it is not yet verified whether the increase went to the US or the EU. The data came 27 days before the suspension in MOFCOM's October 2025 package expires on 10 November 2026; as of 14 October no new extension had been announced by Beijing.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
Value growing twice as fast as volume in September suggests Beijing is managing price and distribution in rare earths rather than quantity. The annual rise in volume does not offset the 9.6% decline over nine months. The likeliest path is that shipments continue on a limited but selective basis ahead of 10 November.
Likely effects
- Magnet and chip inputsNegative1–6 months
The roughly 7% rise in value per tonne pushes up input costs for magnet and semiconductor-equipment makers outside China.
- US–China suspension clockUncertainWeeks
Rising shipments support expectations of an extension; until the country breakdown shows the US share, the 10 November risk stays priced in.
- TürkiyeNegative1–6 months
Higher magnet input prices raise the cost of imported components in Türkiye's white goods, electric vehicles and defence engines.
Possibilities, ranked
- 1Selective flow continues55%
Volumes in October and November stay slightly above last year's level, and unit value keeps rising.
Watch: Chinese customs' country breakdown of rare-earth and magnet exports (end-October)
- 2Suspension formally extended30%
MOFCOM extends the suspension before 10 November, and shipments and licensing speed up.
Watch: MOFCOM announcement on the suspension before 10 November
- 3Shipments tighten again15%
The suspension lapses without a document, licence approvals slow, and October volume falls year on year.
Watch: October rare-earth export tonnage, due in mid-November
