Revolutionary Guards threaten ships beyond the Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on 9 October they had struck a vessel named Sun Shine using the route south of the strait, and announced they would target ships on unauthorised routes anywhere in the region. The same day, US Central Command said it had cleared the main transit lanes of mines.

Location: HORMUZ

Euronews reported on 9 October that the Revolutionary Guards Navy said it had hit the engine room and propulsion system of MV Sun Shine, owned by the company Natwit, starting a fire on board. The Guards said the ship had used an unauthorised route in the southern part of the strait. The New Arab identified the same vessel as an LPG carrier called NV Sunshine; in that statement the Guards also claimed to have taken over management of the strait. According to the statement, companies cooperating with the US will face sanctions and all their ships will be targets.

UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO, the Royal Navy's shipping alert centre) issued a report on the morning of 9 October. It said an LPG carrier had been hit by unknown projectiles 13 nautical miles west of Al Jazeera in the United Arab Emirates. It said a major fire had been brought under control but did not name the ship. The British security firm Vanguard identified the vessel in that area as the Panama-flagged crude tanker GEM NO.2. Whether the ship the Guards say they hit is the one UKMTO reported could not be verified; no casualties were reported in either incident.

The US side paints a different picture. According to Euronews, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on 9 October it had cleared mines from the main transit lanes. It said the lanes were open to ships not violating US sanctions and that thousands of commercial vessels had passed safely. A Euronews tally counts at least 12 attacks, attempted attacks or harassment incidents against tankers and gas carriers between 28 September and 5 October. That is the highest weekly count since the war began on 28 February. At Friday prayers in Tehran on 9 October, worshippers were told the strait would stay closed until Iran's seven conditions were met.

According to The New Arab, ships increasingly use the alternative route along the southern shore of the strait, and the US is protecting vessels on it. Euronews says oil exports from regional producers other than Iran have recently returned to pre-war levels. The Guards' threat on 9 October targets precisely the corridor carrying that recovery.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The Guards are threatening to carry the war out of the strait itself and onto the US-protected southern route that has restored Gulf exports to pre-war levels. The target and identity of the ship are disputed, but at least 12 incidents in one week show the threat is more than rhetoric. The likeliest path is an interim regime in which flows continue but insurance and freight costs rise again.

Likely effects

  • Tanker insuranceNegativeWeeks

As the southern route is declared a target, war risk premiums rise again despite US protection, and shipowners become more selective about transits.

  • Gulf exportsNegative1–6 months

If the Guards extend the threat beyond the region, bypass outlets in the Gulf of Oman also fall within the risk zone and flows at pre-war levels become fragile.

  • TürkiyeNegative1–6 months

Price pressure on oil and LPG persists; for import-dependent Türkiye, relief on the energy bill is delayed.
