IRGC says two supertankers hit mines in Hormuz as Washington disputes it

The Revolutionary Guards said on 17 October that two supertankers, each carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude, had struck mines in the Strait of Hormuz and caught fire. CENTCOM countered that the strait had been cleared of mines and that 400 ships and 100 million barrels of oil had passed through last week.

Location: HORMUZ

According to an AFP report published in the Oman Observer, the Revolutionary Guards said on 17 October that two tankers had hit mines in quick succession and that the second was engulfed by a major fire. The Guards claimed the tanker had switched off its tracking systems and tried to pass along an unauthorised route with US backing. The vessel's name, flag and exact position were not given. Al Jazeera reported on 17 October that the Iranian military had also announced two tankers ablaze in its exclusion zone in the Gulf of Oman on 15 and 16 October. Iranian state broadcaster Press TV aired footage of a burning tanker; neither the footage nor the mine claim has been verified by an independent maritime authority.

Washington tells a different story about the same events. According to The Jerusalem Post, CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said in a video statement on 16 October that 400 ships and 100 million barrels of oil had transited the strait last week. He added that the US blockade had cost Iran 25 billion dollars in oil revenue. Al Jazeera reports that CENTCOM maintains the strait has been cleared of mines and that ships are being hit by projectiles. The US also blamed a Revolutionary Guards projectile, not a mine, for the sinking of GFS Pride on 15 October. Tehran says the US is inflating the numbers to project success. According to UKMTO, at least 12 vessels were attacked in the week to 16 October, and most ships that come under attack do not report it.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Whether or not the mine claim is true, it serves the same purpose: Tehran is raising the cost of uncoordinated transit to push shipowners into the regime it has set up. Read together, CENTCOM's 400 ships and UKMTO's count of at least 12 attacks a week describe a strait that is open but hard to insure. The likeliest path is a period in which mine and projectile claims keep clashing and flows remain volatile.

Likely effects

  • Tanker insuranceNegativeWeeks

Even if the mine claim is never verified, war-risk underwriters will price the uncoordinated route higher, and shipowners' escort queues will lengthen.

  • Oil pricesNegativeWeeks

Brent December futures rose to $109.86 on 16 October; each new supertanker incident adds the risk of a single 2-million-barrel cargo to the price.

  • TürkiyeNegative1–6 months

Higher insurance and freight premiums on Gulf-origin crude and product cargoes raise supply costs for Turkish refineries.

Possibilities, ranked

  1. 1
    Conflicting narratives persist55%

Iran keeps saying mines and the US keeps saying projectiles; transits stay volatile but continue, with attacks holding at around 10 a week.

Watch: UKMTO's weekly attack and transit reporting

  2. 2
    Independent confirmation emerges30%

A shipowner or insurer confirms a mine incident, and traffic on the uncoordinated route contracts markedly.

Watch: JMIC advisory notes and shipowner statements

  3. 3
    The US retaliates15%

As attacks continue, the US resumes the strikes it had halted.

Watch: A CENTCOM announcement of strikes on Iranian coastal positions
