Revolutionary Guards claim seven ships hit, but UKMTO finds no match

The Revolutionary Guards said on 22 October that 7 merchant ships had been hit overnight in the Gulf and Hormuz. UKMTO reported no matching incidents and no ship names were given; Trump called the claims fake hits. Brent closed at 113.17 dollars the same day.

gCaptain reported on 22 October that the Revolutionary Guards' navy said 4 vessels conducting ship-to-ship oil transfers in the northern Gulf had been struck simultaneously and set ablaze. According to the same statement, 3 more ships hit mines west of Hormuz. Iran did not name the vessels, their owners or the US company it says was involved. The Libertarian Institute says the claim was announced on Iranian state television (state media), which said the 7 ships had tried to pass without following Tehran's protocol.

There is no independent verification. gCaptain says UKMTO has published no new incident report matching the claims; in the period ending 16 October the agency counted 12 attacks, 10 of them in Hormuz. In the same assessment UKMTO noted that most targeted ships had not reported to it. On 18 October JMIC said it had found no basis for Iran's earlier claim that 2 supertankers had struck mines.

Trump wrote that Iran was inventing fake hits and mines and that more oil was passing through the strait than before the war. That claim does not square with the measurements either: Wall Street Journal data cited by gCaptain put Hormuz flows, including offshore transfers, at about 82% of pre-war levels. In the same statement the Revolutionary Guards said they could strike US bases in the region if the US Navy kept escorting tankers through. Newsquawk says the December ICE Brent contract closed at 113.17 dollars on 22 October, up 4.35 dollars.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Whether the claim is true mattered less for the price: Brent rose 4.35 dollars on the day it was announced. Because UKMTO says most ships do not report attacks, neither the claim nor the 'fake' charge can be proven quickly. The most likely path is a continued stream of unverifiable claims, with the war-risk premium pricing that uncertainty.

Likely effects

  • Freight and insuranceNegativeWeeks

Underwriters will factor the 7 unverified incidents into their risk models; ship-to-ship transfer zones in the northern Gulf are exposed to higher premiums.

  • Oil priceNegativeWeeks

At 113.17 dollars, Brent is less than 5 dollars from March's wartime peak of 118 dollars; each new claim can narrow the gap.

  • Data reliabilityUncertainWeeks

The gap between UKMTO's count of 12 attacks and Iran's claim of 7 in a single night means incident tallies should be read as a floor.

  • TürkiyeNegative1–6 months

Brent above 113 dollars swells the energy bill of Türkiye, which pays Mediterranean prices for its crude and diesel imports.

Possibilities, ranked

  1. 1
    Claims continue unverified55%

Iran announces new claims, UKMTO and JMIC find no matching incidents, and the premium stays high.

Watch: The number of incidents in UKMTO's weekly assessment that match Iranian claims

  2. 2
    Partial confirmation by ship name30%

Some of the transfer vessels in the northern Gulf are confirmed by name and the attack count is revised up.

Watch: A new incident notice from Ambrey or UKMTO for the northern Gulf transfer zone

  3. 3
    Escalation against US bases15%

The Revolutionary Guards act on the base threat and the conflict moves from shipping to military targets.

Watch: CENTCOM statements and whether US escort of tanker transits continues
