Drone strikes on student dormitory and shelter kill 10 in El-Obeid

Two successive drone strikes killed at least 10 people in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan. A strike on a Kordofan University dormitory killed 5 people and injured 47. A strike on a shelter for displaced families killed 5 people and injured 13.

Location: EL-OBEID

According to Radio Tamazuj, the independent medical group Sudan Doctors Network blamed the dormitory strike on the Rapid Support Forces. The RSF is the paramilitary force that has been fighting Sudan's army since April 2023. The group said the strike took place on Thursday 1 October. An AFP report cited by Arab News, drawing on the Sudanese rights group Emergency Lawyers, places the dormitory strike on Wednesday 30 September and the shelter strike on Thursday. The 1-day discrepancy between the two sources could not be resolved.

A North Kordofan official speaking to AFP also held the RSF responsible for the shelter strike; the RSF did not respond to either report. The claim that the RSF carried out the strikes rests on partisan and local sources and could not be independently verified. The city was also hit on 20 September, when, according to the Doctors Network, 2 people were killed and 20 injured.

Citing UN data, AFP wrote that more than 1,100 people were killed in drone strikes in the first 5 months of 2026. Aid agencies estimate the war has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced more than 13 million. El-Obeid sits at the junction linking the country's central and western regions, so it remains strategically important to both sides.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Drone pressure on El-Obeid has been escalating since 20 September, and targets have shifted to civilian sites such as a dormitory and a shelter. The city's position at the junction between central and western Sudan makes it logical for the RSF to sustain siege pressure with drones. The most likely path is a steady rise in civilian casualties without a ground assault.

Likely effects

  • Civilian casualties and displacementNegativeWeeks

Ten deaths and 60 injuries in 2 days could trigger a new wave of flight from the city and place further strain on the health system.

  • Kordofan supply lineNegative1–6 months

Strikes at the junction linking central and western Sudan slow the army's resupply to the west and the flow of humanitarian aid.

  • International pressureUncertain1–6 months

The Doctors Network's call for UN condemnation could revive the sanctions debate over foreign actors supplying drones to the RSF.
