Jio Platforms IPO is fully covered within 100 minutes

The 30,213 crore rupee (about $3.2 billion) IPO of Jio Platforms, Reliance's telecoms and digital arm, was fully subscribed 100 minutes after opening on 21 October. By the end of the day demand reached 3.01 times. The institutional tranche was 9 times covered, but the retail portion stood at only 0.68 times.

Location: MUMBAI

The offer, priced at 1,065–1,119 rupees a share, is open from 21 to 23 October. Allotment is expected on 26 October and listing on 28 October. Exchange data cited by TradingView show bids for 59.44 crore shares against 19.75 crore on offer as of 17:00 on 21 October; one crore equals 10 million. Domestic financial institutions bid for 25.02 crore shares and foreign institutional investors for 15.14 crore. Retail investors applied for just 5.78 crore shares against a tranche of 8.50 crore. On 19 October the company raised 8,109.85 crore rupees from anchor investors, the large institutions allocated shares before the IPO.

The issue is entirely new shares, and 27,500 crore rupees of the proceeds will go to early repayment of debt at subsidiary Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL). According to Chittorgarh, the company reported total income of 149,759 crore rupees, up about 16%, and net profit of 30,052.7 crore rupees for the year to 31 March 2026. At the top of the range, its post-IPO market value is about 1.03 million crore rupees, or roughly 10.3 trillion rupees. The Daily Star said the company has 533 million subscribers and that the issue is being described as India's fastest-filled IPO.

The make-up of demand shows a clear split between institutional and retail investors: the institutional tranche was 9 times covered while the retail tranche reached only 0.68 times. The employee tranche drew 1.30 times and the shareholder tranche 1.38 times. Foreign institutions' bids for 15.14 crore shares suggest that part of the roughly $3.2 billion issue will be met with overseas money. The final breakdown will become clear at allotment on 26 October. Sources such as HDFC Sky and TelecomLead put end-of-day demand differently, at 3.04 and 3.2 times.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The issue shows that India's capital market can easily absorb a $3.2 billion offer on institutional demand alone. Yet the retail tranche at 0.68 times on day one shows that demand is not broad-based. With 27,500 crore rupees of proceeds going to debt repayment, the issue serves more to lighten the balance sheet than to fund growth investment.

Likely effects

  • Indian capital marketPositiveWeeks

A 30,213 crore rupee issue filled in 100 minutes shows institutional appetite for large IPOs is strong and sets a precedent for the offers that follow.

  • Currency inflowsPositiveWeeks

Foreign institutions' bids for 15.14 crore shares could give the rupee brief support from portfolio inflows if allotment goes ahead.

  • Retail investorsNegativeWeeks

The retail tranche at 0.68 times shows limited household appetite for large issues and a risk that the tranche stays undersubscribed at the close.
