Micron's Taoyuan union calls one-day solidarity strike for 22 October
Micron's Taoyuan union announced on the evening of 20 October a one-day strike on 22 October, the same day the Taichung union holds its second mediation session. The demand is that 15% of operating profit be shared with employees.
Focus Taiwan reported on 20 October that the Taoyuan union called the strike to back the union representing 12,300 workers in Taichung at its second mediation session on 22 October. Strike authority was secured on 7 October, when 1,994 of the 2,012 members who voted backed action. TrendForce gave the same 1,994 votes as 88.3% of 2,258 registered members, while Focus Taiwan puts the number of unionised workers in Taoyuan at about 2,400.
Both unions want a permanent mechanism that distributes 15% of operating profit to staff, and they regard the current incentive scheme as opaque. Anue says that after its 9 October board meeting Micron offered meal allowances and a gift programme rather than a concrete profit-sharing proposal. The Taichung union has not ruled out escalating if no reasonable offer arrives on 22 October.
Micron said on 21 October that it respects employees' legal rights and will continue constructive talks with the 2 unions. President Lai Ching-te urged both sides to negotiate in good faith on 15 October, at the opening of Micron's second advanced packaging plant in Taichung. Micron employs about 3,000 people in Taoyuan, and TrendForce says the fab mainly produces DRAM.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
A one-day strike announced in advance is less about halting output than about putting pressure on the bargaining table. The real threshold is the 22 October mediation: if Micron brings no concrete profit-sharing offer, the 11,000-member Taichung union could also walk out. With memory supply already tight, labour costs in Taiwan are becoming a new variable in the price of AI memory.
Likely effects
- Memory supplyNegativeWeeks
A 1-day stoppage in Taoyuan stays contained; a multi-day strike spreading to Taichung would delay DRAM shipments and push contract prices higher.
- Labour costs in TaiwanUncertain1–6 months
If the 15% profit-share demand is met, staff at domestic chipmakers will seek similar schemes and the sector's wage floor will rise.
- Foreign investment climateNegative1–6 months
The president appealed to both sides on 15 October; a drawn-out dispute enters the risk calculus of foreign firms planning new packaging investment in Taiwan.
