Osman Gazi platform will process Black Sea gas offshore

Bayraktar said on 18 October that output at the Sakarya field will rise to 20 million cubic metres a day with the floating platform, and that gas storage sites are 100% full.

Location: BLACK SEA

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar set out the floating production platform in a live broadcast on 18 October. Under the previous arrangement gas was piped ashore and processed at Filyos; with Osman Gazi, processing moves offshore. Daily output at the Sakarya field rises to 20 million cubic metres. Phase 1 has produced 7.3 billion cubic metres since 2023.

A second floating platform arrives on the field in the first quarter of 2028 and will add 25 million cubic metres a day. Together the two platforms take total capacity to 45 million cubic metres. Bayraktar said natural gas storage had been 100% full since July and that no price increase was planned for October or November.

Onshore, Gabar produces 84,000 barrels a day against a target above 100,000. Türkiye Petroleum took a 15% stake in the Kirkuk fields, with revenue arriving from 2027 and reserves there estimated at about 3 billion barrels. The structural constraint has not changed. However much domestic output grows, the backbone of power and heating demand stays imported gas and coal.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Floating processing moves the Black Sea gas bottleneck from shore to sea and pulls the capacity timetable forward. Even if the 45 million cubic metres targeted for 2028 holds, most of Türkiye's annual gas demand stays on imports. Storage at 100% lowers winter supply risk; it does not lower price risk.

Likely effects

  • Türkiye's supply securityPositiveWeeks

With storage 100% full and Sakarya output rising to 20 million cubic metres a day, reliance on spot LNG through the winter eases.

  • The energy import billPositive1–6 months

Gabar's 84,000 barrels a day and rising domestic gas cap energy imports in 2027-2028, though the scale of the effect depends on prices.

  • The Iraq channelPositive6 months+

If TPAO's 15% Kirkuk stake starts generating revenue from 2027, Ankara gains leverage in pipeline talks with Baghdad.

  • Household billsUncertainWeeks

No tariff rise planned for October or November brings near-term relief, while pricing beyond December stays unclear.
