Sudan's army says it took the RSF's biggest North Kordofan stronghold

Sudan's army announced on 2 October that it had taken the town of Al-Mazroub, about 90 km west of Bara, from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The army described heavy fighting, while its ally the Joint Force said the RSF withdrew after limited contact.

Location: AL-MAZROUB

According to Al Jazeera on 2 October, the army said it took the town after fierce clashes and inflicted heavy vehicle losses on the RSF; it gave no casualty figures. A military source described Al-Mazroub as the RSF's largest position in North Kordofan. According to a spokesman for the army's Special Forces, the town links 2 states, North and West Kordofan. According to The Eastleigh Voice, it sits on the roads to Darfur, about 90 km west of Bara.

A Joint Force spokesman, speaking to Darfur24 on 3 October, said the army and the Joint Force entered the town after the RSF had pulled out. The 2 accounts conflict: one describes heavy fighting and big losses, the other limited contact and a withdrawal. Darfur24 wrote that it had been unable to obtain comment from the RSF as of 3 October; neither claim could be independently verified.

The capture is the latest in a series of announcements. According to The Eastleigh Voice, the army said it took 11 areas on 18 September and Sudri on 25 September. According to Al Jazeera, Kordofan has been the main front of the war since late 2025, accounting for 1 in every 5 attacks recorded in Sudan. The war, which began in April 2023, has displaced more than 14 million people, according to The Eastleigh Voice.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The town changing hands shows the army carrying its North Kordofan advance onto the supply roads to Darfur. Yet the army and its ally tell different stories, and it is unclear whether there was heavy fighting or an orderly RSF withdrawal. If the withdrawal account is right, the RSF may have preserved its strength and the town may not prove a lasting gain.

Likely effects

  • RSF supply lineUncertain1–6 months

Because the town links North and West Kordofan, an army foothold here lengthens and raises the cost of RSF supply running east from Darfur.

  • Humanitarian situationNegativeWeeks

New front-line movements add to displacement of more than 14 million; aid access in towns that change hands may stay uncertain for weeks.

  • Red Sea and the regionUncertainWeeks

The army's announced gains in the west help Burhan arrive at the 4 October summit in Egypt with a strong hand.
