Taiwan's export orders hit a record on a 62.4% September surge

Taiwan's September export orders rose 62.4% year on year to $114.21 billion, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, beating its own forecast of 50.7–55.1%. Orders from the US accounted for $45.38 billion.

Location: TAIPEI

Ministry data reported by Focus Taiwan on 20 October show September export orders setting a monthly record at $114.21 billion, extending year-on-year growth to a 20th month. The ministry had expected growth of 50.7–55.1% for September, the Taipei Times said; the outcome landed about 7 points above that range. Orders for the first 9 months rose 56% to $819.2 billion, already exceeding the full-year 2025 total of $743.7 billion.

Growth rests on 2 product groups. Orders for information and communications technology products jumped 87.3% to $43.88 billion, and electronic components rose 71% to $47.42 billion; together they make up roughly 80% of the total. Optoelectronics orders, by contrast, fell 5.6% on weak panel demand. Huang Wei-jie, head of the ministry's statistics department, attributed September's record to demand for artificial intelligence, data centres and cloud services.

The geographic mix leans heavily on the US. Orders from the US were the largest item at $45.38 billion, followed by ASEAN at $20.85 billion and China and Hong Kong at $18.21 billion. The ministry forecasts $112.5–115.9 billion for October, growth of 62–67%, and $1.1 trillion for 2026 as a whole. Neither source gave the year-on-year change for China and Hong Kong or for ASEAN.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The orders show Taiwan's place in the AI hardware chain deepening independently of the equity rally. An outcome 7 points above the ministry's own forecast suggests demand has not yet peaked. But 80% of the total comes from two product groups and the largest share from a single country, a concentration that also magnifies vulnerability to a demand shock.

Likely effects

  • Taiwan's growthPositiveWeeks

A forecast of 62–67% growth for October keeps fourth-quarter exports and manufacturing output elevated and pushes growth forecasts higher.

  • Single-market dependenceNegative1–6 months

US orders of $45.38 billion make up about 40% of the total; tariff or AI investment decisions in Washington pass straight through to Taiwanese industry.

  • TürkiyeNegative1–6 months

As demand for servers and electronic components concentrates in Taiwan, data centre projects in Türkiye face longer lead times and higher prices for hardware.
