US and Israel plan short, intense strikes on Iran after midterms
The US and Israeli militaries have planned a short but intense round of strikes on Iran after the 3 November midterm elections, according to the New York Times. Some officials see a 3-day operation as sufficient; no decision has been taken.
A New York Times report of 21 October, relayed by the Times of Israel, says the US and Israeli militaries have drawn up plans for a short but intense round of strikes on Iran after the 3 November midterms. According to Ynet, some US officials believe an intense 3-day operation could inflict enough economic damage to change Iran's stance. The report lists energy and nuclear sites, as well as missile and drone stockpiles, among the targets.
The Times of Israel says US forces are expected to be ready in early November and that Trump would reportedly avoid Iran's oil infrastructure to keep a lid on petrol prices. The reports do not clarify how energy facilities can be on the target list while oil infrastructure is spared. No decision to strike has been made; on 9 October Trump said there would be no attack before the elections. A White House official said all options were on the table, and Netanyahu called reports that Trump had blocked an Israeli strike false.
Iran says that if attacked it will widen its targets to commercial shipping, energy infrastructure, data centres and undersea internet cables. Israel goes to the polls on 27 October; the Times of Israel notes that a defeat could make it harder for Netanyahu to order a strike as caretaker prime minister. FNArena says the report helped push Brent to 113.17 dollars on 22 October, its highest close since 4 May.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
The plan shows the war has been postponed until after 3 November, not ended, and the market is already pricing the risk. Sparing oil infrastructure moves the centre of risk away from Iranian supply and onto the Gulf infrastructure on Iran's retaliation list. The most likely path is continued tension into early November, with the decision shaped by Israel's election.
Likely effects
- Oil priceNegativeWeeks
The strike window has been pencilled in for after 3 November; the November–December futures contracts carry that timetable.
- Gulf infrastructureNegativeWeeks
Iran has named energy infrastructure and undersea cables as retaliation targets, shifting the risk onto its neighbours' facilities.
- TürkiyeNegative1–6 months
A new round of strikes on Iran carries risk for neighbouring Türkiye through migration, trade and the energy bill.
