Race for the ECB presidency narrows to two former central bank governors

Eurogroup President Pierrakakis said he had received 2 nominations by the deadline on 6 November: Pablo Hernández de Cos of Spain and Klaas Knot of the Netherlands. Lagarde will step down by 7 February 2027.

Location: BRUSSELS

According to LaPresse, Lagarde informed the President of the European Council on 29 October that she would leave office by 7 February 2027. CNBC notes this is about 9 months before her term expires in October 2027. The Eurogroup will discuss the candidates at its meeting on 9 November, and a TT report based on AFP says a decision could come in mid-December.

Knot ran the Dutch central bank from 2011 to 2025 and is seen as the more hawkish candidate, having argued that the ECB was late to respond to the inflation wave. Hernández de Cos headed the Bank of Spain from 2018 to 2024, now serves as general manager of the Bank for International Settlements and is regarded by analysts as the continuity candidate.

According to CNBC, chief economist Philip Lane and Isabel Schnabel, who oversees market operations, also leave in 2027, so 3 key seats are going into the same political bargain. With France's presidential election due in spring 2027 and its spread over Germany at its widest since the early 2010s, the new president's stance on crisis tools will be decisive for markets.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The ECB's top leadership turns over in 2027 just as energy-driven inflation and the French risk premium converge. A Knot presidency would put more weight on conditionality in crisis tools; Hernández de Cos is seen as closer to continuity and financial stability. The most likely path is for leaders to settle the presidency in December as a package together with the Lane and Schnabel seats.
