Swiss Re lets P&C reinsurance revenue shrink by 1.2 billion dollars

Swiss Re reported on 5 November that nine-month net income rose 3% to 4.2 billion dollars. The P&C reinsurance unit posted a combined ratio of 77.3%, but its revenue fell from 14 billion to 12.8 billion dollars; the company is walking away from volume at competitive prices.

Location: ZURICH

Group net income for the third quarter was 1.3 billion dollars and the nine-month return on equity 22.5%; both figures beat analyst expectations. Net income at P&C reinsurance (P&C Re) fell 6% to 2.2 billion dollars. The unit's combined ratio improved from 77.6% a year earlier to 77.3%, against analyst expectations of 78.5%.

Large losses totalled 941 million dollars over nine months, 624 million of them in the third quarter. The natural catastrophe share of 640 million dollars came from the Colombian earthquake in August and storm Kristin; the man-made share was 301 million dollars. According to Artemis, the 640 million dollars of catastrophe losses came in below the annual budget.

The real signal lies in new business written in 2026. The new business contractual service margin (CSM), the amount that new business will release as profit over time, fell from 2.5 billion to 1.8 billion dollars, about 28%. Chief financial officer Anders Malmström said on 5 November that price pressure had intensified in markets with few losses, most of all in property catastrophe.

Investments are cushioning earnings. The nine-month return on investments was 4.0%, and recurring investment income 3.1 billion dollars. The recurring yield rose from 4.1% to 4.2%, and the Swiss Solvency Test ratio stood at 259% on 1 October, above the 200–250% target range. The company kept its annual profit target of 4.5 billion dollars and is nearing the end of its 1.5-billion-dollar buyback programme.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Swiss Re's current earnings come from the hard pricing of past years and a 4% investment return; the margin on new business has shrunk by 28%. Rather than follow prices down, the company chose to give up 1.2 billion dollars of volume. The most likely path is a selective property catastrophe renewal on 1 January 2027 and another round of revenue contraction.

Likely effects

  • Property catastrophe reinsuranceUncertainWeeks

One of the largest balance sheets giving up volume points to a 1 January renewal in which price is set increasingly by capital markets and new entrants.

  • Reinsurer profitabilityNegative1–6 months

The fall in new business CSM from 2.5 billion to 1.8 billion dollars indicates that a 77.3% combined ratio cannot be sustained in 2027.

  • Cedent costsPositive1–6 months

In a market where volume is changing hands, primary insurers are renewing property catastrophe protection more cheaply, and the savings feed through to commercial property premiums.

Possibilities, ranked

  1. 1
    Selective renewal continues60%

Swiss Re does not join property catastrophe rate cuts on 1 January; revenue shrinks again in 2027 and margins hold.

Watch: The 1 January renewal price and volume change in Swiss Re's full-year results in February 2027

  2. 2
    Return to volume25%

Under competitive pressure the company follows prices to defend volume, and new business margins fall further.

Watch: P&C Re new business CSM falling below 1.8 billion dollars in the full-year results

  3. 3
    Losses harden pricing15%

A large catastrophe loss in the fourth quarter halts the 1 January rate decline, and volume grows again with price.

Watch: Insured losses above 10 billion dollars from a single catastrophe by the end of December
