Hon Hai buys half of Mitsubishi Electric's car unit for ¥115bn

On 16 October Mitsubishi Electric signed a definitive agreement to transfer 50% of its automotive equipment unit, Mitsubishi Electric Mobility, to Hon Hai's investment arm for about 115 billion yen. Completion is expected in October 2027, subject to competition approvals.

Location: NEW TAIPEI

According to Evertiq's report of 16 October, the buyer is Lin Yin International Investment, Hon Hai's investment management arm. The deal values the unit at 320 billion yen in enterprise value and 230 billion yen in equity value; the price paid is exactly half the equity value. The two companies will run the unit jointly. The plan is to combine Mitsubishi's expertise in electric powertrains, software and vehicle control with the manufacturing scale and speed to market of Hon Hai, better known as Foxconn. Together they aim to offer electric vehicle platforms developed in Japan.

The first target is the Japanese car industry, with the global market to follow over the medium to extended term. A company statement cited by Placera says Mitsubishi Electric expects an impairment charge of about 100 billion yen in the fiscal year ending March 2027, and the unit will be deconsolidated after the transfer. The process began with a memorandum of understanding the two companies signed on 24 April 2026. Focus Taiwan listed the deal among Taiwan's leading business stories on 17 October.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

By handing half of its vehicle equipment business to a Taiwanese partner, Mitsubishi Electric absorbs a 100 billion yen impairment while keeping the unit in Japan. For Hon Hai, the deal brings access to Japanese powertrain and software know-how for its electric vehicle platform. The most likely path is for competition approvals to come through and for the partnership to be tested first by supplying Japanese carmakers.
