The Houthis fire a ballistic missile at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia's Hormuz bypass

The Saudi-led coalition said on 16 October it had shot down 1 ballistic missile fired at Yanbu, 2 cruise missiles over the Red Sea and 3 drones. Yanbu is the main port through which Saudi oil leaves via the Red Sea without passing the Strait of Hormuz.

Location: YANBU

According to SBS, Turki al-Maliki, spokesman for the coalition and the Saudi Defence Ministry, announced the interceptions on X on the afternoon of 16 October. The 3 drones were downed in the south of the country and the Riyadh area. According to a Reuters report published by The Jerusalem Post, the coalition did not name the attacker, while Saudi Civil Defence issued warnings for Jazan and Khamis Mushait. No casualty or damage figures were released in the first hours. Aden's Security Directorate said 2 missiles struck Aden Airport the same night, the second attack on the facility in under a week; no casualties were reported.

The attack targeted the outlet the kingdom relies on to get around the Hormuz constraint. A CBS round-up published on Yahoo says Houthi attacks have killed about 20 people in Saudi Arabia in a few weeks. Thirteen of them died in a single strike on King Khalid Airport in Riyadh. The Houthi-run health ministry says 124 civilians have been killed and 327 wounded in Yemen since 3 September; Reuters could not verify these figures. According to SBS, December Brent futures closed 3.72% higher at 109.86 dollars that day, topped 110 dollars intraday and posted their highest close since 19 May.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

This time the Houthis targeted Yanbu, Saudi Arabia's insurance policy against Hormuz. The missile was downed and no damage was reported, but the security of the Red Sea outlet now depends on interception success. Brent rising to 109.86 dollars the same day shows the market pricing both outlets coming under pressure at once. The most likely path is that the attacks continue.

Likely effects

  • Saudi exportsNegativeWeeks

Every attack on Yanbu raises insurance and loading costs for exports that bypass Hormuz; a single hit could disrupt the bypass flow.

  • Oil pricesNegativeWeeks

December Brent futures rose 3.72% on the day of the attack; a risk premium on the Red Sea outlet is being added to the Hormuz premium.

  • TürkiyeNegative1–6 months

Risk to Saudi crude and product shipments via the Red Sea and Suez raises freight and insurance costs for Türkiye's refinery supply.
