Korea grows 1% in the third quarter on chip exports
The Bank of Korea reported on 27 October that the economy expanded 1.0% in the third quarter, against a 0.7% median in a Reuters poll. A central bank official put semiconductors at roughly half the gain, while private consumption fell 0.2%.
The advance estimate is more than three times the 0.3% the Bank of Korea projected for the quarter back in August, the Korea Times reports. Exports rose 2.3%, led by chips, machinery and electrical equipment. Facility investment climbed 4.1%, dragged higher by spending on semiconductor production equipment. Imports also rose 2.4%, with crude oil and chip-making equipment the standout lines.
Year-on-year growth reached 3.4%, ahead of a 2.6% forecast, according to the Seoul Economic Daily. Real gross domestic income, which adjusts output for the purchasing power of trade prices, jumped 18.8% from a year earlier. That is the largest rise since the fourth quarter of 1977. Private consumption slipped 0.2%, its weakest reading since the first quarter of 2022, and shaved 0.1 point off growth. The private sector's contribution fell from 1.1 points to 0.2 points, while the public sector swung from −0.5 to +0.8 points.
A Reuters report carried by investingLive notes that if the fourth quarter matches the third, 2026 growth lands near 3.7%, against the 3.3% annual figure the Bank of Korea forecast in August. Exports from January to September cleared 800 billion dollars and are on course to finish the year above 1 trillion dollars. The central bank raised rates in July and September, left policy unchanged last week and kept its hawkish framing.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
The headline is strong, but half the growth rests on one sector while domestic demand erodes. Korea's growth mix amounts to a single-lever exposure to the global artificial intelligence investment cycle. The likeliest path is chip exports carrying the economy for several more quarters. The break risk sits in any slowdown in AI demand, or in the funding behind it.
Likely effects
- Korean monetary policyUncertainWeeks
Growth above forecast supports the Bank of Korea's hawkish framing, while weak consumption remains the main objection to another increase.
- Asian chip supply chainPositive1–6 months
The 4.1% rise in facility investment shows equipment orders still flowing, which extends demand visibility for tool and memory suppliers.
- Korean householdsNegative1–6 months
Equity volatility and car plant strikes are holding consumption down; chip profits reach households through dividends and bonuses only in early 2027.
Possibilities, ranked
- 1Chips carry, domestic demand crawls60%
Exports clear 1 trillion dollars and the Bank of Korea lifts its annual forecast, but private consumption stays flat.
Watch: The Bank of Korea's November forecast update and October–November export data
- 2Broad-based recovery25%
Fourth-quarter dividends and bonuses turn consumption positive and growth spreads beyond semiconductors.
Watch: Fourth-quarter private consumption data and consumer confidence
- 3Brake on the AI cycle15%
A slowdown in global AI investment cuts chip exports, and single-source growth weakens quickly.
Watch: A monthly decline in Korean semiconductor exports
