Riyadh schools switch to remote learning for a week amid Houthi threat
Schools in Riyadh suspended in-person teaching and moved classes online from 27 September to 1 October. No official reason was given. The decision followed the coalition's announcement that it had shot down 2 Houthi drones heading for Riyadh on 26 September.
According to an AA report published by TGRT Haber at 10:46 on 27 September, schools told parents that from 27 September to 1 October lessons would be delivered through 'Madrasati' and other approved platforms. The same report said neither the Ministry of Education nor the Riyadh Education Directorate gave a reason. The National confirmed on 27 September that at least 3 schools had taken the decision, but it could not be verified that all schools in the city were covered.
According to The National, coalition spokesman Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki said 2 Houthi drones were shot down in the Riyadh area and 2 ballistic missiles towards Khamis Mushait. The coalition had also intercepted 6 ballistic missiles fired at Taif and Yanbu on 24 September. The Houthis declared a naval blockade in July and have carried out attacks almost daily since then. Riyadh schools also switched to remote learning on the same platform in December.
