Russian guided bombs kill seven in Kharkiv and wound dozens

According to governor Syniehubov, Russia struck Kharkiv city and 10 settlements on 5 October with guided bombs, a missile, artillery and 195 drones, killing seven people. Across Ukraine the 24-hour toll reached 13 dead and 104 injured.

Location: KHARKIV

Gwara Media reported that Kharkiv governor Oleh Syniehubov said the attack involved one missile, three guided bombs, artillery and 195 drones of various types. A guided bomb is a cheap but heavy munition dropped from an aircraft that glides to its target on a wing kit. The governor said three of them fell on Kharkiv on 5 October. He said six of the dead and 59 of the injured were in the city's Slobidskyi district. Sources diverge on the number injured. The Kyiv Independent reported 70, while Gwara Media, quoting the governor, reported 80, including three children. Gwara said 18 people were hospitalised, two in serious condition.

The Kyiv Independent reported at least 13 dead and 104 injured across Ukraine over 24 hours. Three people were killed in Donetsk and one each in Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy and Kherson. In Kryvyi Rih a hospital was hit by Banderol cruise missiles, injuring four people, two of them medical staff. The Kyiv Independent also reported that on the night of 6 October one of the bridges over the Dnipro in Zaporizhzhia was hit by a drone and closed to traffic. Five people were injured, two of them Red Cross workers.

As of 6 October no Russian statement on these attacks could be obtained. Neither the claim that the targets were military nor the civilian casualty figures could be independently verified. An EA WorldView round-up on 6 October said Ukraine shot down 114 of 137 Russian drones the same night. The Kyiv Independent reported that Kyiv's Southern and Northern bridges were also targeted several times between 1 and 4 October. The pattern of attacks is widening from the power grid to transport infrastructure.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The Kharkiv attack shows Russia combining guided bombs and drones against cities behind the front, and adding bridges to its target list. The casualty figures come from Ukrainian sources; Russia has made no statement and the numbers could not be verified. The most likely path is an increase in attacks on cities and transport infrastructure before winter.

Likely effects

  • Ukrainian logisticsNegativeWeeks

Repeated strikes on Dnipro bridges slow transport in Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv and lengthen military and civilian resupply.

  • Kharkiv industry and populationNegative1–6 months

Guided bombs landing in the city's central districts raise the risk of fresh departures from Kharkiv and business closures.

  • Western air defence supportUncertain1–6 months

Civilian casualties strengthen Kyiv's case for additional air defence against the aircraft that carry guided bombs.

Possibilities, ranked

Strikes on cities and bridges continue60%

Russia keeps hitting transport and residential areas in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv; daily civilian casualties stay high.

  2. 2
Focus shifts back to the grid30%

As the cold sets in, strikes concentrate on energy facilities and the number of guided bombs aimed at city centres falls.

  3. 3
    Marked drop in attacks10%

Diplomatic contact or reinforced air defence markedly reduces the frequency of attacks.
