SiriusPoint offloads 400 million dollars of legacy reinsurance reserves to RiverStone

RiverStone International announced on 6 November that it had completed a loss portfolio transfer taking on about 400 million dollars of SiriusPoint's legacy reinsurance liabilities. The deal is expected to release more than 200 million dollars of capital.

Location: BERMUDA

In a loss portfolio transfer (LPT), SiriusPoint passes about 400 million dollars of claims reserves from prior years to RiverStone in return for a premium. According to Reinsurance News, the deal covers all of SiriusPoint's remaining run-off reserves and is the first transaction between the two companies. SiriusPoint chief executive Scott Egan described it as closing the book on the legacy portfolio; the deal was announced on 6 November.

SiriusPoint's quarterly report to the SEC for the period ending 30 September 2026 shows third-quarter net income of 87.0 million dollars and shareholders' equity of 2,229.4 million dollars. The loss, acquisition and other expense ratios in the same report add up to a combined ratio of 86.5% by Talay's calculation. The more than 200 million dollars of capital said to be released equals about 9% of that equity.

For RiverStone the deal is part of a 2026 series. On 5 November it announced an LPT of about 325 million dollars with Clear Spring Property and Casualty, and it had earlier completed a 1.6 billion dollar transfer with QBE. In a soft market where JP Morgan expects double-digit price declines on 1 January 2027, insurers are offloading legacy reserves and redirecting capital to new business or to shareholders.

Reinsurance News reports the deal as completed, but the subsequent events note in the SEC filing for the period after 30 September could not be opened and read. The signing date, limit and approval conditions of the transfer therefore could not be verified.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

By closing its legacy reinsurance book, SiriusPoint releases more than 200 million dollars of capital, about 9% of its equity. In a soft market that capital will go either to new business or to shareholders; either way it feeds a run-off market that sustains the capacity glut. The most likely path is for the company to channel the capital into growth in specialty lines, while buyers such as RiverStone keep doing large transfers in 2027.

Likely effects

  • SiriusPoint balance sheetPositiveWeeks

About 400 million dollars of reserve uncertainty leaves the balance sheet; more than 200 million dollars of capital becomes available for new business or distribution.

  • Run-off marketUncertain1–6 months

RiverStone's transfers with QBE at 1.6 billion dollars, Clear Spring at 325 million and SiriusPoint show buyers of legacy reserves gaining scale.

  • Reinsurance capacityNegative1–6 months

If capital freed from legacy books returns to new business, it adds pressure to prices already expected to fall by double digits on 1 January 2027.
