Taiwan's August export orders reach a record 102.96 billion dollars, up 71.4% year on year

Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs put August export orders at 102.96 billion dollars on 22 September 2026; the annual increase rose to 71.4% from 61.9% in July and the run extended to a 19th month.

TAIPEI

According to data published by the Ministry of Economic Affairs on 22 September 2026, August export orders set a record at 102.96 billion dollars; the previous record was 97.94 billion dollars in July. The annual increase rose to 71.4%, above July's 61.9%, taking growth into a 19th consecutive month and acceleration into a third consecutive month. By category, electronic products rose 83.9% to 45.75 billion dollars, information and communications technology products 100.5% to 34.21 billion dollars, machinery 28.3% to 2.21 billion dollars and base metals 26.8% to 2.34 billion dollars. Optoelectronics, by contrast, contracted 5.0% to 1.97 billion dollars.

By market, orders originating in the United States rose 88.9% to 42.13 billion dollars; information and communications technology orders from the United States nearly tripled, up 195.3%. The January-August total was 704.99 billion dollars, an annual increase of 55.0%. Among the sub-items reported by RTTNews, mineral products rose 91.6%, chemicals 15.4% and plastics and rubber 6.7%. The ministry's statistics unit identified demand for artificial intelligence servers and chip design activity as the main drivers, and forecast September orders of 106.0-109.1 billion dollars, an increase of between 50.7% and 55.1%.

The data quantify Taiwan's central position in the global artificial intelligence hardware supply chain; but because order data measure commitments rather than shipments, it cannot be independently verified that all of this volume will convert into revenue. The 5.0% contraction in optoelectronics reveals that growth is compressed into a single segment, the artificial intelligence server and electronics line.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The August data give concrete form to Taiwan's near-monopoly position in the artificial intelligence hardware cycle with a record of 102.96 billion dollars. The base of growth is narrow: electronics and information and communications items carry almost all of the increase while optoelectronics contracts. The September forecast being pulled back to a range of 50.7-55.1% suggests the acceleration is nearing its peak; the most likely direction is high but decelerating growth.

Likely effects

  • The global chip supply chainPositiveWeeks

The 100.5% rise in ICT orders shows demand for artificial intelligence servers straining capacity through 2026; advanced packaging and HBM bottlenecks keep pricing power in Taiwan.

  • The US-Taiwan trade balanceNegative1–6 months

Orders originating in the United States rising 88.9% to 42.13 billion dollars enlarges the deficit line that feeds pressure in Washington for chip tariffs and onshoring of production.

  • Türkiye's electronics importsNegative1–6 months

A 100.5% rise in orders in the server and ICT category could push up delivery times and unit costs for data centre and corporate hardware purchases in Türkiye.

Possibilities, ranked

  1. 1
A record that continues while slowing55%

September orders come in within the 106.0-109.1 billion dollar band, the annual increase falls below 55% but the run extends to a 20th month.

  2. 2
An overshoot above the forecast band25%

Artificial intelligence server orders exceed expectations and September comes in above 109.1 billion dollars.

Watch: September monthly revenue statements from TSMC and the ODM manufacturers

  3. 3
    A sharp brake20%

Tariffs or an inventory correction push the annual increase below 50.7% and the fragility of single-segment growth becomes visible.

Watch: Monthly contraction in categories beyond optoelectronics and a US decision on chip tariffs
