Trump says an Iran decision is near as Tehran digs in
According to Iran International, Trump told a rally in Wasilla, Alaska, on 14 October that a decision on Iran would come very soon. A WSJ report cited by the Times of Israel says Iran is fortifying nuclear and border sites against possible strikes after the 3 November US midterms.
At the same rally Trump said Iran's nuclear sites were buried under thousands of tonnes of rock and that Washington was fed up with Tehran. According to the Times of Israel, Trump said on 13 October that the midterms had no bearing on the Iran decision and that oil prices would fall quickly once the war ends. The WSJ report, based on satellite imagery, says Tehran warned Saudi Arabia that its oil facilities could be hit. The same live blog says a report claimed Netanyahu was pressing Trump to restart the conflict with Iran before the election; the prime minister's office denied it.
A Reuters report cited by Iran International says the Revolutionary Guards are using unarmed spotters on small boats to identify targets, including US Navy ships; a US official said one such sailing boat was destroyed last week. Two Iranian officials said attacks have reached waters off Qatar and the UAE. ISW says Iran is passing threats through back channels to deter renewed US military action and is testing drones, missiles and air-defence systems. Ahead of Israel's 27 October election, former chief of staff Eisenkot said Netanyahu was unfit to run a new Iran campaign.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
The signal from Washington is that the strike option remains on the table, but the calendar is squeezed between the 3 November and 27 October elections. Iran is building deterrence through fortification and a warning over Saudi facilities, raising the risk that a new US strike spills over onto Gulf energy infrastructure. The likeliest path is harsher rhetoric up to the elections, with any kinetic decision coming afterwards.
Likely effects
- Oil risk premiumNegativeWeeks
Trump's promise of a decision very soon and Brent's 0.8% rise in Asian trading on 14 October show the risk premium moving on rhetoric; a strike would raise the risk of Saudi facilities being targeted.
- Gulf infrastructureNegative1–6 months
Iran's warning to Saudi Arabia over oil facilities exposes the Saudi east coast, already under Houthi pressure, to a second source of threat.
- Israeli domestic politicsUncertainWeeks
Debate over an Iran campaign moves to the centre of the campaign before the 27 October election; the new government's stance could affect the timing of a US decision.
