Ukrainian drones hit a third Yandex data centre in a week
With the strike on its Vladimir facility on 11 October, 3 of Yandex's data centres in Russia have been hit by drones within a week. Yandex Cloud is running in emergency mode, and Yandex Pay was still offline on 12 October.
The Record reported on 12 October that the strikes hit Sasovo in the Ryazan region on the night of 7–8 October, Kaluga on 9 October and Vladimir on 11 October. Sasovo and Vladimir were shut down entirely, while part of the infrastructure at Kaluga was knocked out. The 3 sites have a combined capacity of about 115 MW. Sasovo reportedly housed 2 of the 3 supercomputers Yandex uses to train AI models, and Vladimir the Galushkin supercomputer. Yandex has not said whether the supercomputers were damaged. The Register puts Yandex's data centres in Russia at 5, The Record at 6; the two sources conflict.
Yandex Cloud served about 64,000 customers as of mid-year; the number affected has not been disclosed. According to The Register, the company advised customers to back up their resources with other hosts. The head of Yandex's fintech unit said money in the payment system was safe but could give no date for reopening. On 10 October Yandex amended its terms of service to exclude liability for contract breaches caused by drone attacks. Russian state media outlet RBC reports that the company has agreed with Selectel, K2Cloud and VK Cloud to migrate customers. Zelenskiy described the strikes as retaliation for Russian attacks that hit at least 6 data centres in Kyiv in late September.
The outage has crossed borders. Türkiye Today reported on 12 October that Yandex Go was unavailable in Kazakhstan for 36 hours. Kazakhstan's digital development ministry said personal data were held domestically, but some core components of the taxi and delivery services ran abroad. OC Media reported on 12 October that some Yandex services in Armenia worked intermittently, and that local taxi service GG raised its base fare on 11 October. Yandex has not directly linked the disruption to the attack.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
Data centres are now openly on both sides' target lists: Russia hit facilities in Kyiv in September, and Ukraine struck 3 Yandex sites in a single week. In Russia, where cloud services are concentrated in one company, an outage at a single provider halts payments, transport and retail together. The most likely path is that the strikes continue and Moscow brings data centres under air-defence cover.
Likely effects
- Russian digital economyNegativeWeeks
Dozens of third-party services built on Yandex Cloud went down at once; as companies migrate to backup hosts, costs and the risk of data loss rise.
- Russian AI capacityNegative1–6 months
Shutting sites that house supercomputers threatens computing power that export controls make hard to replace.
- Data centre insuranceUncertain1–6 months
Yandex's move to exclude liability for drone attacks will speed the spread of war-exclusion clauses in cloud contracts near conflict zones.
