US inflation climbs to 3.7%, putting an October hike back in play
Consumer prices rose 0.6% on the month and 3.7% on the year in September, according to data released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics on 14 October. Core inflation came in at 2.6%, above the 2.5% consensus.
BLS data compiled by Gotrade show the gasoline index rising 9.1% on the month in September, leaving it 34.2% above a year earlier; the energy index rose 5.2% on the month. The monthly pace of headline inflation accelerated from 0.1% in July to 0.4% in August and 0.6% in September. Food was flat while shelter rose 0.4% on the month; Allianz's Ripley estimates that shelter alone added about 0.15 points to the monthly core figure.
According to Investing.com, CME FedWatch put the probability of a 25-basis-point hike at the 27–28 October meeting at around 22% before the data and 39% after it. The Seoul Economic Daily reported that the probability briefly jumped to 55% before settling near 40%. Gotrade says the 10-year Treasury yield rose 9 basis points intraday to 5.306%, while the 30-year yield climbed 5 basis points to 5.612%.
Analysts were split. LPL Financial's Roach said the pressure was spreading beyond energy, while RSM's Brusuelas expects one more 25-basis-point hike this year. The Fed's communications blackout begins on 17 October, and October CPI will be published on 10 November at 16.30 TRT.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
The September print vindicates the hiking cycle the Fed began in September, but most of the heat comes from gasoline. On the core side, 2.6% is only 0.1 points above expectations. Pricing for an October hike is back near 40%, and the decision will hinge on whether the energy shock passes through to second-round effects.
Likely effects
- Fed expectationsNegativeWeeks
A one-day jump in hike odds from 22% to 39% has made the 27–28 October meeting live and raised the weight of the last speeches before the blackout.
- US yield curveNegativeWeeks
The 10-year yield rose to 5.306% on data day; energy-driven inflation is also keeping the inflation premium elevated at the far end of the curve.
- TürkiyeNegativeWeeks
Higher odds of a Fed hike widen the dollar's rate advantage and put pressure on lira carry demand ahead of the 22 October MPC meeting.
