US 10-year yield slips below 5% as tech sell-off deepens
Money fleeing technology stocks on 22 October found its way into Treasuries. The 10-year yield fell 15 basis points to drop below 5% for the first time since 23 September, while the 30-year eased by only 10 basis points.
Data cited by TIPP Insights at midday on 22 October showed the 10-year Treasury yield down 15 basis points at 4.996%, the 2-year down 14 basis points at 4.69% and the 30-year down 10 basis points at 5.32%. Yahoo Finance's closing table puts the 10-year at 4.953%, a fall of 19.3 basis points, and describes it as the sharpest one-day drop in more than two years. Sources differ on how far back one has to go to find a bigger daily decline.
Inflation data was not the trigger. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.60% to 26,008.86 and the S&P 500 lost 1.21% to 7,663.43, while the VIX volatility index jumped 14.09% to 19.03. Brent climbed above 111 dollars a barrel the same day. Oil drew support from a New York Times report that the US and Israel are preparing fresh strikes on Iran after the 3 November midterm elections.
According to Yahoo Finance, 5-year breakeven inflation sits slightly below its pre-war level, so most of the rise in yields since February has come from real rates. Reuters reports that initial jobless claims fell by 6,000 to 194,000 in the week to 17 October. The Fed's policy range stands at 3.75–4.00%; markets expect a hold at the 27–28 October meeting and one more hike in December.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
This was a flight to safety, not a repricing of the Fed path. The 2-year and 10-year fell 14–15 basis points while the 30-year gave up only 10, so the term premium at the back end of the curve held its ground. On the same day the French 10-year yield rose to 5.11%, and dollar assets once again served as the refuge. While oil holds above 111 dollars, the relief may not last.
Likely effects
- Term premiumNegative1–6 months
The 30-year fell less than the 10-year, showing that the extra yield demanded for extended-maturity debt did not melt away even in an equity sell-off; pass-through to mortgage rates stays limited.
- Emerging marketsPositiveWeeks
A 10-year yield below 5% briefly eases dollar funding costs and opens a narrow window for high-premium issuers such as Argentina and Türkiye.
- FedUncertainWeeks
With jobless claims at 194,000, the labour market offers no case for easing; lower yields are not enough to shift expectations of a December hike.
Possibilities, ranked

Once the tech sell-off calms, the 10-year climbs back towards 5% and the back end stays above 5.3%.
Watch: The 10-year yield moving back above 5.0% after the 28 October FOMC
- 2Risk appetite keeps breaking30%
The equity sell-off deepens, the 10-year falls to 4.8% and the curve steepens.
Watch: The Nasdaq extending its losing streak and the VIX rising above 25
- 3Oil shock pushes yields up15%
Reports of new strikes on Iran lift inflation expectations and the 10-year breaks above 5.2%.
Watch: 5-year breakeven inflation rising above its pre-war level
