Brazil shock drives Argentine country risk to a one-year high
Argentine country risk rose 8.2% to 765 basis points on 26 October, the day after Lula's win, on JP Morgan's index. The central bank, the BCRA, broke its run of dollar purchases, while Mexico decoupled from the regional decline with a loss of 0.6%.
La Nación puts country risk, the extra yield Argentine dollar bonds pay over US Treasuries, at 765 basis points against 707 on Friday. The index has climbed 26% in October and 34% since the start of the year, its highest reading since the end of October 2025. BAE Negocios reports losses of up to 2.4% on extended-maturity dollar bonds and 1.1% at the front end, and the Merval fell 4.5% in dollar terms. The paper sees country risk heading for 800 points. Rio Times instead has the Merval closing 3% lower at 99,227 points in peso terms, so the two outlets measure in different currencies.
The wholesale dollar gained 11.50 pesos to 1,541 pesos, according to BAE Negocios. The BCRA halted its run of purchases, postponed the reserve purchase programme and intervened in the forward market. The Treasury is reported to have sold about 100 million dollars, although that figure could not be verified. La Nación has the off-market CCL rate up 2.1% at 1,683 pesos, taking the spread over the official rate beyond 8%.
Argentine equities were hit hard on Wall Street: Mercado Libre fell 7.81%, Supervielle 9.43% and BBVA Argentina 7.97%. A PPI note carried by La Nación called the real's depreciation a headwind for the peso. Damage across the region stayed selective, with Chile down 1.6%, Colombia 1.4% and Mexico 0.6%. Investing.com data show Mexico's five-year CDS almost unchanged at 97.34 basis points on 26 October, while Brazil's jumped to 137.43.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
The 8% fall in the real puts direct competitive pressure on the peso, as PPI also argued. Country risk at 765 shows the BCRA suspending its reserve-building plan at the first external shock. Mexico's decoupling suggests investors are sorting the region by the strength of each fiscal anchor rather than treating it as one bloc. If the pressure persists, Argentina's timetable for returning to market funding stretches further out.
Likely effects
- Argentine reservesNegative1–6 months
With the BCRA halting purchases and entering the forward market, the reserve accumulation target slips and the 34% rise in country risk this year could become entrenched.
- Peso competitivenessNegativeWeeks
A fall of more than 8% in the real makes Argentine exports dearer in the Brazilian market and adds devaluation pressure to the peso.
- TürkiyeUncertainWeeks
Emerging-market investors sorting countries by fiscal anchor reach Türkiye's risk premium indirectly, through global fund flows rather than any direct channel.
