Denizkurdu-I/2026 exercise under way with 100 vessels, 50 aircraft and 14,000 personnel; Greek Cypriot defence minister cites joint defence system

According to the Ministry of National Defence, the Denizkurdu-I/2026 exercise is being held on 20–25 September with 100 vessels, 50 aircraft and 14,000 personnel. The same day, Greek Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas said Southern Cyprus, Greece and Israel had the same defence system.

According to the Ministry of National Defence announcement, the Denizkurdu-I/2026 exercise led by the Naval Forces Command is being conducted from 20 to 25 September 2026 with the participation of 100 vessels, 50 aircraft and 14,000 personnel. Land Forces, Air Force and Coast Guard elements are also taking part; the scenario includes live-fire drills and decision-making in a multi-threat environment. Sources differ on the exercise area: the announcement carried by DHA lists three seas, the Black Sea, the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, while Bengü Türk adds the Sea of Marmara and writes of four seas. According to Bengü Türk, the distinguished observer day will be held aboard TCG Anadolu in the Eastern Mediterranean on 24 September.

The exercise follows a series of multinational exercises intensifying in the region. In the same month, MEDUSA-15, led by Greece and Egypt with the participation of France, Italy and Southern Cyprus, was held, and Israel and Greece completed a joint naval exercise with four vessels. On 22 September the newspaper Takvim wrote that the Ministry had shared new footage and that Greece was closely following the exercise.

On 22 September, as reported by the newspaper Haravgi, Greek Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas said Southern Cyprus, Greece and Israel had the same defence system, enabling them to operate together in the Eastern Mediterranean; he did not specify which system he meant. Palmas said the military parade on 1 October would be different from previous years.
