Jio Platforms debuts at a 21% premium on its first day

Jio Platforms shares began trading on the BSE and NSE on 28 October at 1,358 rupees, 21.36% above the IPO price of 1,119 rupees. The same morning the Sensex fell 601 points, led by IT services companies such as Infosys and TCS.

Location: MUMBAI

According to the Tribune, the company's market value reached 12.5 lakh crore rupees (12.5 trillion rupees) on its first trading day. The 21-23 October offering was subscribed 22.19 times overall; the institutional tranche was covered 70.55 times, the retail tranche only 2.72 times. The Federal says the issue of about 30,213 crore rupees overtook Hyundai Motor India's 27,870 crore rupee offering of 2024 to become India's largest IPO. The entire offering consisted of new shares, and up to 27,500 crore rupees of the proceeds will go to reducing Reliance Jio Infocomm's debt.

With about 53.33 crore (533 million) subscribers as of June 2026, Jio carries around 60% of India's wireless data traffic. The Federal reports that foreign institutional investors have sold more than 3 lakh crore rupees of shares in 2026 and remained net sellers throughout October. According to the Tribune, however, they were net buyers of 4,240.39 crore rupees on 27 October. The same morning the Sensex fell 601.14 points to 72,997.55, and the Nifty 50 dropped 146 points to 22,604.80. Infosys, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra and TCS weighed most on the index, while Brent rose 1.36% to 115.4 dollars over the same hours.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Institutional demand of 70.55 times shows capital in India is ready to flow into domestically focused digital infrastructure. On the same day, IT services exporters dragged the index lower, suggesting investors are rotating from technology models tied to foreign demand towards owners of domestic networks. Whether this divergence turns from a one-day price move into a lasting trend is not yet clear.
