Russia attacks Kyiv with 161 Shahed-type drones: 2 dead, between 23 and 43 injured; Moscow says it hit military-industrial and energy targets

According to the Kyiv Independent, the first strike came at around 06:00 in Kyiv, where 8 air raid alerts had been issued since midnight. Russia was reported to have used Gerbera and Parodiya decoy drones alongside the 161 Shahed-type drones. A 9-storey residential building in Solomianskyi, a 4-storey business centre in Holosiivskyi, a petrol station, warehouses, data centres of the providers Pavutina and UTELS and railway infrastructure near Kyiv's central station were hit; a fire broke out at the historic Shaiba market and about 100,000 households were left without internet access. The same source gave 2 dead and at least 43 injured, while Euronews reported 2 dead and 23 injured at 14:12; the difference most likely reflects the timing of updates but could not be verified.

The Russian account differs. As reported by Euronews, the Russian Defence Ministry said it struck Ukraine's military-industrial facilities, energy infrastructure and logistics hubs; it did not respond to claims of residential and civilian damage. According to the ministry statement reported by the Kyiv Independent, Russian air defences downed 514 Ukrainian drones the same night over 18 regions, including Bashkortostan, Crimea, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Euronews also wrote that a fire covering about 6,000 square metres broke out at a shopping centre in Zaporizhzhia and that 2 people were injured. The attack came hours before Zelenskyy's address to the UN General Assembly.
