Türkiye's security council urges concrete international steps against Israel
Türkiye's National Security Council (MGK) issued an 8-point statement on 30 September after a meeting lasting about 3.5 hours. It called on the international community to take concrete steps against Israel, which it said was violating Syria's territorial integrity.
According to Yeni Şafak, the council met at Beştepe under President Erdoğan and sat for about 3.5 hours. The 8-point statement, as reported by AA, says the Israeli government continues its attacks without honouring its commitments in Gaza and Lebanon. The council called for concrete steps against Israel, which it said violates Syria's sovereignty and seeks to block stability in the region. The statement also said the war between the US and Israel on one side and Iran on the other had become a vicious circle that fuels fragility across the region.
According to Hürriyet, the statement urged the parties to return to negotiations and end a conflict whose global consequences are growing heavier. The council described Iraq's stability as critical to regional peace; on 26 September Fidan had said the Turkish presence at Bashiqa would be gradually reduced. The statement also addressed intensifying attacks on civilian infrastructure in the Russia–Ukraine war and the escalation in Yemen. One of the 8 points was devoted to the goal of a terror-free Türkiye, targeting the PKK/KCK-PYD/YPG, FETÖ and ISIS.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
The statement shows Ankara framing Israeli activity in Syria as a security problem separate from the Gaza file. On the Iran war, it keeps a mediator's stance, calling for negotiations without taking sides. None of the 8 points contains a new military or economic sanction, so for now the call remains at the level of diplomatic pressure.
Likely effects
- Türkiye–Israel relationsNegative1–6 months
The emphasis on violations of Syrian sovereignty moves the two countries' rivalry in Syria into institutional security language and raises the risk that tension becomes entrenched.
- Regional diplomacyUncertainWeeks
The call for negotiations over the Iran war shows Türkiye wants to preserve its mediating role and avoid direct involvement in the conflict.
- Iraq filePositive1–6 months
Treating Iraq's stability as critical supports the search for cooperation with Baghdad on issues such as the gradual handover at Bashiqa and the Development Road.
