Russian drone hits Kyiv's Academy of Sciences in daytime attack

Russian drones set the building of Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv on fire on the afternoon of 28 September. Casualty figures vary between sources, from 1 to 2 dead and from 4 to 24 injured.

According to a Ukrainska Pravda entry at 13:52 on 28 September, a drone struck the academy building in the Shevchenkivskyi district and started a fire. The toll at that hour was 1 woman killed and 4 people injured, 3 of whom were taken to hospital. An evening update from UNITED24 Media said at least 2 people had been killed. Former National Security and Defence Council Secretary Volodymyr Horbulin was lightly injured, and his deputy was killed. In the same wave, a pharmaceutical company and petrol stations in Kyiv and a business centre in Dnipro were also targeted.

The Kyiv Independent's summary at 20:49 on 28 September gave the toll as 1 dead and 24 injured, including 3 children. The Ministry of Education and Science building and the Dobrobut medical centre were also damaged. The discrepancy in casualty figures between sources could not be verified. The same summary said a Russian drone fell in the Volyn region near the Yahodyn border crossing, a few hundred metres from the Polish border; Polish airspace was not violated. Ukrnafta is building concrete shelters at 13 petrol stations in the Kyiv region because of the attacks. The Kyiv Independent also reported that Trump had asked Ukraine to scale back refinery strikes, while Ukrainian officials said this depended on Russian reciprocity.
