More than 270 fighters die in a single day in Yemen

Government sources told AFP that 115 soldiers were killed in the 24 hours to 6 October, while Houthi military sources said they lost 160 fighters. The government says it has taken Mocha and the Bab el-Mandeb coast; the Houthis denied this on 6 October.

Nukta reported on 6 October, citing AFP, that more than 270 soldiers and fighters were killed in Yemen's fighting over the previous 24 hours. Government sources said 115 soldiers were killed and dozens wounded in Houthi missile and drone attacks. Houthi military sources said they lost 160 fighters, most of them in Saudi air strikes. Both figures are the parties' own claims. As of 6 October there was no independent count and the total could not be verified. The Houthis alleged that a Saudi air strike in Hajjah killed six members of one family, including four children aged three to eight. That claim could not be verified either.

Claims of control on the ground did not match on 6 October. The National reported that Saudi-backed forces said they had taken the Bab el-Mandeb coast, the Dhubab area and the port of Mocha. The coalition says it destroyed 324 high-value Houthi targets with 100 combat aircraft. CBS News reported that Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said on 6 October that his forces had held all their gains on the ground. CBS noted that both sides have a history of exaggerating their gains.

On 6 October the front also reached Saudi territory. Al Jazeera reported that coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said a ballistic missile fired at Khamis Mushait had been intercepted. The New Arab said the Houthis targeted Jizan and Najran airports, injuring three people. Saudi Arabia's interior ministry announced on 6 October that filming or sharing interceptions would incur legal liability, further narrowing independent verification from the ground. The UN says the fighting has displaced 184,000 people. The New Arab reported that Türkiye and Pakistan pledged military support to Saudi Arabia under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. It is the 2026 pact's first test in the field.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Daily losses above 270 show that the offensive launched on 5 October has turned into a war of attrition rather than a swift clearing of the coast. Who holds the Bab el-Mandeb coast cannot be verified for either side, and the Saudi filming ban will prolong that uncertainty. The most likely path is positions changing hands along the coastal strip and continued missile fire into southern Saudi Arabia.

Likely effects

  • Red Sea freight and insuranceNegativeWeeks

While fighting continues on both shores of the strait, insurers will keep Bab el-Mandeb transits in a high-risk class; the cost of the main alternative to the Strait of Hormuz will not fall.

  • Southern Saudi airportsNegativeWeeks

Fire aimed at Jizan, Najran and Khamis Mushait keeps alive the risk of disruption to civilian flights and military resupply in the region.

  • Türkiye and the Mecca pactNegative1–6 months

Rapidly rising casualties enlarge the on-the-ground risk for Türkiye, which has approved deployment to Saudi Arabia under the Mecca pact.
