Bangladesh stays the top EU denim supplier but loses share

Eurostat data show EU denim imports fell 4.40% to 2.96 billion euros over January to August. Bangladesh stayed in front with 869.13 million euros, its share slipping to 29.40%.

Location: DHAKA

The Eurostat figures carried by Prothom Alo on 26 October show the ranking shifting as the market contracts. Bangladesh's eight-month denim exports fell 5.85% to 869.13 million euros, from 923.11 million euros a year earlier. Its share eased from 29.85% to 29.40%. Pakistan, in second place, stood at 525.49 million euros after a 7.88% loss, with its share measured at 17.78%. Türkiye took the sharpest hit, down 21.08% at 438.25 million euros.

Within the shrinking total, some suppliers grew. Egypt rose 31.46% to 188.14 million euros, China 17.70% to 197.13 million euros and Vietnam 45.38% to 53.98 million euros. India grew 18.62% to 31.40 million euros. Bangladesh's loss therefore does not come from weaker demand alone; it also comes from competition for share. August told a different story. Exports rose 12.71% to 134.08 million euros and the monthly share climbed to 31.17%.

The structural constraint lies in unit prices and logistics distance. Egypt, which gained share, and the rivals other than Türkiye are either close to the EU or benefit from different tariff and sourcing arrangements. Bangladesh's advantage in scale holds. Yet an eight-month share below last year's suggests August's rebound may be a single month rather than a trend.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Bangladesh keeps its lead in EU denim imports, but a 29.40% share sits below where it stood a year ago. In a market that has shrunk to 2.96 billion euros, double-digit growth from Egypt, China, Vietnam and India shows the loss is driven by competition rather than demand. August's 12.71% gain cushions the picture without turning the eight-month trend. Türkiye's 21.08% fall also shows that proximity on its own is not enough.

Likely effects

  • Export revenueNegativeWeeks

A 54 million euro loss over eight months puts limited but lasting pressure on the hard currency flow tied to garment earnings.

  • Competitive positionNegative1–6 months

Double-digit growth from Egypt and Vietnam could turn Bangladesh's scale advantage into unit price pressure over the medium term.

  • Turkish supplyNegative1–6 months

Türkiye's 21.08% fall in EU denim exports shows its proximity advantage weakening against price competition.
