UN mission treats the US strike on the Minab school as a war crime: at least 178 civilians killed in two attacks

In a report published on 17 September 2026, the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission established by the UN Human Rights Council said there were reasonable grounds to believe that war crimes had been committed in two strikes carried out by the United States in Iran on 28 February 2026. In the strike on the Shajara-i Tayyiba primary school in Minab, in southern Iran, more than 150 people were killed, about 120 of them children, according to Al Jazeera; NBC News reported that Iranian state media had put the death toll at 168. In the strike on a sports facility and residential area in Lamerd, 22 civilians were killed. Both sources agree that at least 178 civilians in total were killed in the two attacks. The mission, chaired by the Bangladeshi jurist Sara Hossain, was established by the Council in 2022.
According to the report, the mission concluded that the United States had not met its obligation to do everything feasible to verify whether the school was a military objective; it noted that photographs and videos from before the strike showed easily distinguishable features such as murals depicting children on the outer walls, school signage and playgrounds. The same report accused the Iranian authorities of crimes against humanity during the protests that ran from December 2025 into early 2026, through internet shutdowns, unlawful killings, torture, arbitrary detention and enforced disappearances; while the official toll is 3,038 dead and 25,000 injured, the UN said the real figure was far higher but could not be verified. According to NBC News, the White House, the State Department and the Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment; Al Jazeera reported that US Central Command denied carrying out a strike in Lamerd that day, while Trump said in June that the school had not been struck deliberately.
