Rig sinking off Gabon forces BW Energy to suspend its spending plan
Borr Drilling's Prospector 5 rig sank off Gabon on 24 October; on 28 October the bodies of 3 of the 115 people on board were recovered, and 2 remain missing. BW Energy suspended its 600–650 million dollar 2026 capex guidance and cut its production outlook to about 23,000 barrels a day.
According to a Reuters report published in Insurance Journal, the jack-up rig (a drilling platform that plants its legs on the seabed and raises its hull out of the water) sank in the Dussafu Marin licence area at 21:40 local time on 24 October. Borr's preliminary finding points to a punch-through, in which one leg broke through the seabed and collapsed during preloading. BW Energy holds 73.5% of the licence and Panoro Energy 17.5%. The rig had not yet started drilling.
A Reuters report carried by Baird Maritime said the Gabonese Navy found 3 bodies on 28 October using remotely operated vehicles, but they could not be identified. Africanews counts 1 Indian, 3 Gabonese and 1 Croatian national among the casualties; the Indian national's death was confirmed on 27 October. Petroleum Minister Clotaire Kondja has opened a technical investigation. The ministry said there had been no harmful spill.
According to World Oil, BW Energy restarted production on 28 October at the MaBoMo facility, which had been shut as a precaution. The company said net Dussafu output fell from 19,300 to 16,800 barrels a day in the third quarter because of a pump failure. Its 2026 production outlook dropped from a range of 24,000–27,000 barrels to about 23,000. The Phase 2 campaign was set to add up to 20,000 barrels a day of gross output at peak; there is no restart date. The rig's insurance cover and the size of the loss do not appear in the sources and could not be verified.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
The sinking hit Gabon's future barrels rather than today's output. MaBoMo was back online within 4 days, but Phase 2, which would add up to 20,000 barrels a day, has no timetable. The constraint is no longer the resource but finding a suitable rig, and what the investigation concludes about seabed risk. The most likely path is that drilling slips into 2027 and Gabon's offshore growth plan is delayed by several months.
Likely effects
- Gabonese oil outputNegative1–6 months
While Phase 2's five new wells lack a timetable, the country's offshore production growth slips into 2027 and its public revenue plan is delayed.
- Offshore drilling insuranceNegative1–6 months
A total loss from a punch-through could tighten site survey requirements and scrutiny of cover for jack-ups working in West Africa's shallow waters; the amount could not be verified.
- Rig marketNegativeWeeks
BW's search for a replacement rig tightens a jack-up supply that is already constrained in the region.
Possibilities, ranked
- 1Drilling slips into 202760%
BW signs a new rig contract within months, Phase 2 wells are drilled in 2027 and no resource is lost.
Watch: A BW Energy announcement of a new rig contract for MaBoMo Phase 2
- 2Investigation slows the field30%
The technical investigation finds gaps in the seabed survey, Gabon imposes new site requirements and the timetable stretches further.
Watch: The Gabonese Petroleum Ministry's technical investigation report
- 3Quick replacement10%
Another rig in the region is brought in quickly and drilling starts before the end of the year.
Watch: BW reinstating its 2026 capex guidance
