French spread tops 150 basis points ahead of Moody's review
The spread between French and German 10-year yields widened 8.5 basis points in a day to 150.8 on 20 October. Moody's reviews France's Aa3 rating on 23 October.
FinanceFeeds, citing Ideal Investisseur data, said France's 10-year yield stood at about 4.93% on 20 October and Germany's at 3.42%. The spread widened from 142.3 basis points on 19 October to 150.8. It had been around 110 basis points at the end of September and, on Reuters' measure, hit 158.67 in early October, the widest since 2011. An intraday reading cited by Demócrata showed the spread stretching as far as 153 basis points on 20 October.
The street triggered the 8.5 basis-point move. Reuters reported on 19 October that weekend protests ended in thousands of arrests and looting; the CAC 40 fell 1.5% that day and the French 10-year jumped 13 basis points. Italy's 10-year yield rose 11 basis points the same day to 4.58%. French CDS rose 5 basis points to about 82, still below the 2 October peak of 89.
Moody's holds France at Aa3 with a negative outlook; a one-notch cut on 23 October would take the rating to A1, leaving the country well inside investment grade. Commerzbank analysts told Reuters they expect a limited impact on the spread, since Moody's would merely be catching up with the other agencies. Demócrata reported that Morningstar DBRS wrote that prolonged social tension could make the 2027 budget harder to pass and keep borrowing costs high until the 2027 presidential election.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
With the spread above 150 basis points, a one-notch Moody's cut on 23 October looks largely priced in. The real risk is not the rating but protests locking up the 2027 budget and widening the deficit through spending. If the spread breaks the early-October peak of 158.67 basis points, the problem moves from the ratings channel to the fiscal rule and to Italy.

- Türkiye's euro fundingNegative1–6 months
For Turkish companies and the Treasury borrowing in euros, a higher European risk premium adds a cost that narrows the issuance window.
