French borrowing costs press against 5% ahead of Moody's verdict
France's 10-year yield reached 5% on 21 October for the first time since 2002. The spread over Germany widened from 135.2 to 157.5 basis points in a week. Moody's reviews its Aa3 rating on 23 October.
France's 10-year government bond yield reached 5% on 21 October for the first time since 2002. According to investingLive's European close, it stood at 5.009% in the afternoon, up 6.4 basis points, while the German 10-year sat at 3.421%. In Ideal Investisseur's daily series, the France–Germany spread widened from 135.2 basis points on 15 October to 157.5 on 21 October. The same series has the French yield closing the day at 4.99%.
Sources diverge on the level of the spread on 21 October. Reuters put it at 150 basis points that day and noted a 15-year high near 160 basis points in early October. FXStreet reported the same day that the spread had reached 160 basis points. According to Reuters, the Italy–Germany spread widened by only 4 basis points to 116, so contagion to the periphery was limited.
Behind the sell-off is a government unable to pass its 2027 budget through parliament, and weeks of protests. FXStreet said French public debt reached 3.596 trillion euros in the second quarter, or 119% of GDP. According to FinanceFeeds, Moody's will review on 23 October the Aa3 rating that has carried a negative outlook since 24 October 2025. The euro did not escape: EUR/USD fell 0.15% to 1.1219 on 21 October.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
The French premium is now pricing domestic politics: with no budget majority, debt sits at 119% of GDP and the yield has hit 5%. The Italian spread holding at 116 basis points shows the stress is country-specific for now. A Moody's downgrade on 23 October would make a lasting move above 160 basis points likely. Even if the rating holds, budget uncertainty is not enough to pull the premium lower.
Likely effects
- Sovereign borrowingNegative1–6 months
A 5% yield lifts the cost of new issuance to a 24-year high and makes rolling over 3.596 trillion euros of debt more expensive.
- EuroNegativeWeeks
As the spread widened to 157.5 basis points, EUR/USD slipped to 1.1219; French risk is capping the euro's recovery against the dollar.
- Periphery debtUncertainWeeks
The Italian spread widening by only 4 basis points shows contagion has not yet begun; the Moody's decision will be the first test of that divergence.
