France's private sector slips back into contraction in October

France's flash composite PMI fell from 51.1 to 48.4 in October, against a forecast of 50.5. The euro-area composite slipped from 53.1 to 51.9. Input costs accelerated on energy while output price inflation eased.

Location: FRANKFURT

According to investingLive, France's composite PMI came in at 48.4, services at 48.4 and manufacturing at 49.3, all below forecast. The PMI, or purchasing managers' index, signals contraction below 50. New orders fell at the fastest pace since May as clients postponed projects. The future output index dropped to its lowest since April 2020. Firms blamed their pessimism on next year's election and the state of the public finances.

FXStreet reported the euro-area composite at 51.9, short of the 52.7 expected. Tradingpedia said services fell from 53.0 to 51.7 and manufacturing from 52.9 to 52.4. Germany's composite eased from 53.8 to 52.8, though manufacturing rose to 54.2. Phil Smith of S&P Global said Germany's recovery remains fragile. EUR/USD traded 0.2% lower on the day at 1.1195.

Prices are pulling in different directions. An investingLive assessment dated 23 October says manufacturing input costs rose at the fastest rate since May because of energy, while output price inflation eased slightly. The same assessment puts market odds at about 90% that the European Central Bank (ECB) holds rates on 29 October, and about 68% for a December hike.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The energy shock is cutting demand in the euro area and inflating costs rather than pricing power: input costs are accelerating while output prices slow. That makes a December ECB hike harder to justify, because second-round price pressure is fading. France's contraction shows the budget crisis has now reached the real economy.

Likely effects

  • ECBUncertainWeeks

Slowing output prices and services falling to 51.7 weaken the case for a December hike; the 68% probability carries downside risk.

  • French public financesNegative1–6 months

A contracting private sector erodes tax revenue, and the plan to cut the 5.4% deficit is squeezed by its growth assumption too.

  • TürkiyeNegative1–6 months

Weaker euro-area demand slows orders in Türkiye's largest export market, and a softer euro trims exporters' currency gains.
