Houthi strike kills 12 at Riyadh airport, worst in a decade

Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation said 12 people were killed and 309 wounded in an attack on King Khalid International Airport on the afternoon of 10 October. It was the third attack on the airport in a week, and Trump said the US would consider joining the Saudi-led coalition against the Houthis.

Location: RIYADH

Civil aviation data cited by Al Jazeera and The National show that 4 of the dead were Saudi and 8 foreign nationals. The foreigners included 2 Bangladeshis and one each from the US, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan. Some of the wounded are in serious condition. According to The National, Flightradar24 data show about 260 flights into and out of Riyadh were cancelled on 10 October and 219 delayed. The kingdom's warning system did not sound before the attack.

The two sources diverge on responsibility. According to Al Jazeera, the head of the Houthi media office wrote on X that the group had shut the airport; The National reports no Houthi claim of responsibility. The weapon type could not be verified either. Nawaf Obaid of King's College London, speaking to Al Jazeera, said initial assessments pointed to a ballistic missile. Figures for the earlier attacks that week also differ: Al Jazeera wrote that 3 Saudis died on Thursday, while The National put the toll from the two previous attacks at 4.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki called the attack a war crime and promised a decisive response; according to Gulf News, the coalition said it struck 136 military targets in Houthi areas the same day. Trump called the attack unacceptable and said the US would decide whether to join the coalition. Secretary of State Rubio confirmed that 1 US citizen was among the dead. A projectile also landed near King Fahd Airport in Dammam.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The attack shows the Houthi campaign can directly paralyse Saudi civilian transport. A third strike on the same airport in a week, and 260 cancelled flights, reveal that air defences cannot protect the capital. The likeliest path is the coalition widening its air campaign in Yemen and pressure mounting for direct US involvement. Responsibility and weapon type have not yet been independently verified.

Likely effects

  • Gulf air travelNegativeWeeks

Cancellations by Emirates, Etihad and Kuwait Airways could weaken Riyadh's role as a regional hub and business centre for weeks.

  • Yemen frontNegativeWeeks

The coalition's claim of 136 targets struck suggests the ground offensive on the Bab el-Mandeb coast will accelerate with air support.

  • Saudi risk premiumNegative1–6 months

Civilian casualties in the capital add a security premium to perceptions of the kingdom's sovereign credit and investment climate.

  • TürkiyeUncertain1–6 months

For Türkiye, which is preparing support for Saudi air defence under the Mecca Pact, demand and risk on the ground are growing together.
