Five glide bombs kill at least 17 civilians in Zaporizhzhia
Russian forces dropped 5 guided aerial bombs on residential districts of Zaporizhzhia at 04:48 local time on 10 October. Regional governor Fedorov reported 17 dead and 16 wounded in his latest update; reports citing Ukraine's State Emergency Service put the death toll at 20. Three of the dead are children.
According to Kyiv Post, the guided bombs, known as KABs, damaged at least 26 residential buildings in the Shevchenkivskyi and Voznesenivskyi districts, 23 of them apartment blocks and 3 private houses. A five-storey building took a direct hit. In the morning, 12 people were unaccounted for. The death toll climbed through the day to 7, 8, 11, 12 and 15. Fedorov's last update gives 17 dead, while Euronews, citing the State Emergency Service, reports 20 dead and 16 wounded. The gap between the two figures could not be verified.
Euronews reported that Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 160 drones the same night, 117 of which had been downed by 09:00; 82 of those were Shahed-type. Hits were recorded at 14 locations. According to Kyiv Post, 6 KABs were dropped on the city the previous day, killing 1 person and wounding 23. Zelensky said 13 regions came under heavy bombardment that night.
Zelensky linked the attack to the sanctions waiver the US granted Russian diesel the same day. According to Kyiv Post, he said Russia had thanked Washington for lifting sanctions on its diesel exports with 5 KABs. Neither of the 2 sources carries any Russian statement on the attack. The strike came 2 days after a bombardment in Kramatorsk hit 2 buses and killed 33 people on 8 October.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
Russia is sustaining a pattern of mass civilian casualties from glide bombs in cities behind the front line; Kramatorsk and Zaporizhzhia have seen more than 50 dead in 3 days. The attack's coincidence with the diesel waiver hardens Kyiv's call for Western sanctions. The likeliest path is KAB strikes continuing on a weekly rhythm against cities near the front.
Likely effects
- Ukrainian air defenceNegativeWeeks
A shortage of extended-range interceptors able to keep KAB-carrying aircraft at a distance leaves cities near the front exposed.
- Sanctions politicsUncertainWeeks
The attack falling on the same day as the diesel licence increases pressure against the waiver in the US Congress and the EU.
- Peace processNegative1–6 months
Mass civilian casualties harden Kyiv's position of making any halt to strikes on energy facilities conditional on reciprocity.
